Whiskerville.org animal sanctuary needs help! Location: Texas City, TX

The Houston SPCA has agreed to take the Whiskerville
Animal Sanctuary animals. Now the critical issue is transport. Whiskerville is located in Texas City, which is on the Texas coast but not actually on Galveston
Island. All city and county government has been shut
down. They desperately need help from outside their community to get the animals moved to the Houston SPCA. If any of you are near enough and have the time and a vehicle to help, it would be appreciated.

Better yet, if you have contacts in the Houston area who can arrange more formal transport, please help. The police WILL let people in to Texas City, at least through today. We have many people willing to donate money, and if we need to pay for arranged transport that will come in handy, but what is really needed right now is actual transport. There are almost 400 animals (300 cats and almost 100 dogs) at Whiskerville.

The number at Whiskerville is 409-682-5584. Please
only call if you have an actual offer of help as they need to keep the line open, and it is a cell phone number so it costs them

Hey Hair, I am in Houston and I have good news and bad news AND even worse news. The good news is Rita has shifted to the east which puts us on the best side of it. The bad news is my hound dog, Cate, has just come into her first heat. Then the even worse news is that my almost 2 year old male Jack Russel Terrier hasn't noticed Cate is in heat. Does that mean my male JRT is "light in his loafers"? LOL!

I'd go, but there is no way to get into Houston from Dallas as all lanes on the interstates are contra-flowed north.

Unfortunately, this should have been done yesterday when we had more options. My cousin might have been able to help with this, as he has a large truck and trailer, but he lent it to his daughter so she could move her horses up to Meridian.

Is the Houston SPCA going to be safe? Did it flood during Allison? If it did, that's not a good place for any animals to be.

In all seriousness... Are you going to stay put then there in Houston? Is someone going to tell all the people on the parking lot freeway they can turn around now?

Do JRT's have that kind of attention span?

I don't know, Sinkspur. I don't know. I only know Texas City is an even worse place to be when Rita makes landfall. I don't think they have a chance there at all...

Take care,

Get those dogs neutered and spayed! I'm on a jihad about this.

No dog is safe around me when I've got my scalpel!

They don't, but if I had known about this yesterday, I might have been able to help. I know a rodeo stock contractor in Fulshear. I'll call him and see if he might be able to do something. He's probably getting his animals out of harm's way.

It's okay...we have a gay dog too, an 8 y/o Collie/St. Bernard mix. He prances, still squats to pee and he's constantly kissing and humping our other male dog. Hubby gets mad when I call "it" (he's been fixed) a faggot.

My brother the vet, says let her go thru her first heat cycle and then get spayed, she will be a healthier female dog because of it. I always obey the doctors orders. I am hoping Hairy will be a father one day if he can find a suitable bride. His kind should reproduce.

Our house is not in the storm surge zone and it doesn't flood, we had always planned to stay here. Some of the people are returning home and others watching the news have decided not to leave.

As I feared, Smokey's getting his horses and bulls up to a ranch in Mexia. He's got two more trips to make, so he won't be able to free up his large stock trucks until tomorrow. But he's going up that way too, so there won't be anybody to drive them.

I know-- I wish I would have/could have posted it y-day. But at that time, the people were planning to stick it out. They felt it was too late at that time to get all the animals out and were definitely not going to abandon them.

I think it took some mighty persuasion from just about everybody on the list yelling at them to get out, and the change to CAT 5, for them to realize that they really need to get out.

Thank you for trying to contac your rodeo stock contractor friend. I know-- everyone is trying to get out of harm's way, but maybe he'll know another avenue to pursue...

Thanks again

I have a friend who lives just east of Houston. She had to fly home early to evacuate her horses... Meanwhile, I am busy with supporting a shelter down in Gulfport.
