Shaggy survivors hanging on after Katrina

More than two months after Hurricane Katrina blew in, animals are still being found alive in New Orleans, pulled out of attics and from beneath flooring or off of the streets, where they’ve been surviving on sheer will and the kindness of strangers who leave food for them.

Some are little more than skin wrapped around bones. Starving, dehydrated and depressed, they still greet people trustingly, perhaps somehow recognizing that they represent salvation from their utterly bewildering circumstances.

From later in the same article: "Then he recounts the story of a Vietnam veteran, a double amputee, who had hung onto a tree with his dog, an apricot standard Poodle named Morgan Le Fay, after the Arthurian enchantress. Eventually, he managed to make it onto the roof of his house, with the dog, but when he was evacuated by helicopter, he was forced to leave Morgan behind.

“By good fortune, we picked up the dog later, but had no idea where he was,” Mountain says. “Volunteers around the country started e-mailing each other and doing searches and they discovered that the guy was at a hospital in Miami, Fla., so a couple of them drove the dog down there. For this guy, this dog is really all he has.”"

Hi Apackof2,

In some ways, yes, a saddened ping. Because it reminds us of so many heartbreaking stories. Of people being forced to leave pets behind. I just read a story about an 80 year old man who floated for 5 days on debris with his dog Chelsea. He was rescued but they wouldn't let him bring the dog any further. Well, Chelsea has just been located and will be reunited with her owner very soon.

And there was the story of a family that came home after seven weeks to find their Doberman Pinscher still alive. Instead of rushing her to a vet, they set her out with the trash. That part is horrible. But the good side of things is that a neighbor called some animal rescuers, who got the dog to an animal hospital. She is going to make it and be re-homed.

I didn't mean for this post to be a saddened ping, but a testament to the resiliency of these pets, hope for those out there still searching for their lost pets, and a tribute to those out there STILL working to save pets and reunite them with their owners.

The deepest circle of hell is reserved for those who would willingly abandon a pet.

I'm getting two kittens today, don't even know what they look like. I'll look you up when I've got pictures.

I keep starting to reply to this, but I still can't find the words to show my disgust with people who would do that to a trusting dog.

I agree. I had to evacuate for Rita and lord it was a zoo at my sister's house. She had two weimaramers, I had a GSD and a yellow lab, my cousin had a basset cross, and a friend from NOLA had a jack russell terrier who thought he was the big boss in charge. They figured out their pecking order and behaved well for the most part because they all were inside during the storm. There is no way I would have left them behind.

Are they rescue kitties? If so, how did you get them? I have tried and tried to get some foster somethings, and haven't had any luck.

JRT's always think they're the big boss. LOL - I wish I could have seen it.

They aren't rescues in any official sense. They're from a litter that a friend's co-worker had. I hope, but don't know, what their health and care has been. I know they haven't been vetted at all, and will need to get into the vet for shots asap. Our vet is open for walkins tomorrow.

I had some good luck with my big old cat accepting a kitten that was lost here for a few days, so my hope is he'll tolerate kittens.

I've tried too, to sign up for fostering programs before, never actually had them call me either.
