Everything that goes into Frank Pringle’s recycling machine—a piece of tire, a rock, a plastic cup—turns to oil and natural gas seconds later

A tire or a plastic cup I could believe. They are both made of a lot of complex carbon compounds and I could see them breaking down into various alkanes. The rock is where he jumped the perpetual energy shark.

Those same petrochemical-based materials could probably be used more efficiently as fuel to a thermal generating plant, without the extra energy input of the microwave machine.
