Candid Camera: Clerk Whacks Robber With Mug

Clerk Says He Was Worried About How He Might Look On Video

POSTED: 10:17 am EST December 12, 2007

ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. -- When a thief started taking cash from his register over the weekend, Dunkin' Donuts employee Dustin Hoffmann fought back by clobbering the man with a ceramic mug.

Caught On Tape: Clerk Fights Robber With Cup

But Hoffmann admits he was less worried about the stolen cash than how he might look on the video-sharing site YouTube.

"What was going through my mind at that point was that the security tape is either going to show me run away and hide in the office or whack this guy in the head, so I just grabbed the cup and clocked the guy pretty hard," Hoffmann told The Record of Bergen County.

The man came into the shop and ordered a pastry Sunday night, according to Elmwood Park Police Chief Donald Ingrasselino.

Once Hoffmann opened the register, the man jumped over the counter and started taking cash.

Police said Hoffmann grabbed the man's wrists while hitting him with the mug, which is used to hold tips.

Hoffmann managed to scare away the man, who made out with just $90 and left behind a baseball cap police are holding to test for DNA evidence.

No arrests have been made. Hoffman plans to post the surveillance video when he can.

"There are only a few videos like that on YouTube now, so mine's going to be the best," he said. "That'll teach this guy."

That’s one way to get one’s 15 minutes.

With Youtube, anyone might be the next idol or rock star.

A complete ban is not practical right now. So Corzine will concentrate on banning high-capacity, assault-style mugs. One step at a time...

“Fotchanat that he dinna have a gun, he coulda’ been shot...”

Are we talking about the robber, or the clerk?

Oh, it’s NJ, so he’s talking about the clerk being shot, not the robber.

The criminal didn't die in the attempt, so didn't remove himself from the gene pool.

It happened in Jersey. The Detroit television station probably picked it up to let the locals know that people in other parts of the country also have desperate thugs.

Not the criminal, the guy that did the mug smashing.... he told a reporter "There are only a few videos like that on YouTube now, so mine's going to be the best, That'll teach this guy." and then posted the video on Youtoube. I would think that would enrage the punk that attempted the robbery enough to cause him to come back to the donut shop with a weapon and teach the clerk a lesson ending in death...
