Dinosaur that lived 85 million years ago was size of a bus, but breathed like a bird

A huge carnivorous dinosaur that lived about 85 million years ago had a breathing system much like that of today's birds, a new analysis of fossils reveals, reinforcing the evolutionary link between dinos and modern birds.

The finding sheds light on the transition between theropods (a group of two-legged carnivorous dinosaurs) and the emergence of birds.

Scientists think birds evolved from a group of theropods called maniraptors, some 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period, which lasted from about 206 million to 144 million years ago.

GIANT CHICKEN ROAMED EUROPE IN THE CRETACEOUS!

A Czech archeology team have discovered the missing link between dinosaurs and chickens. The giant skeleton, excavated in the Moldova river valley, is currently on display in the National Museum in Praque. Wishbone anybody?

‘dino-fuzz’

"Then, in the late 1990’s, came a scientific bombshell – Sinosauropteryx, a dinosaur, with feathers. Preserved in fine-grained lake sediments deposited in the Early Cretaceous, about 128 million years ago, in what is now north-east China, this turkey-sized theropod exhibits clear traces of skin bearing tiny, hair-like protofeathers: ‘dino-fuzz’. At least, that is what some researchers claimed, but others were not so sure and wanted more and better evidence. Thankfully, basic economics – selling fossils is far more lucrative than tilling the earth – solved the problem and the Chinese lake deposits began to produce lots and lots and lots more fossils, among them many beautifully preserved small theropods – with feathers. Some bore ‘dino-fuzz’, some had rather simple, but clearly feather-like structures and some came with feathers that were indistinguishable from the feathers of early birds fossilised in the same rocks."

Right. Good air in bad air out. Works for me.

dino-chicken

The world’s first biplanes were ... dinosaurs? Scientists say dino-chicken used two sets of wings to flit between trees

Like the Wright brothers, the first flying dinosaurs took to the air with two sets of wings.

New analysis of the winged Microraptor gui suggests that the first feathered dinos relied on a biplane-like wing configuration to swoop from tree to tree. The result may settle a century-old controversy over how the first feathered creatures achieved flight.

“It is intriguing to contemplate that perhaps avian flight, like aircraft evolution, went through a biplane stage before the monoplane was introduced,” said Sankar Chatterjee of Texas Tech University. “It seems likely that Microraptor invented the biplane 125 million years before the Wright 1903 Flyer.”
