Jacqueline Kennedy lifts the skirt of her ivory double-faced silk satin twill inaugural ball gown, designed by Oleg Cassini, as she and her husband, President John F. Kennedy, leave their Georgetown home in the snowfall en route to the inaugural concert in Washington, D.C., Jan. 19, 1961.

Lady Bird Johnson, center, her daughters Luci Baines, left, and Lynda Bird, right, model their inaugural gowns in New York City in this Jan. 12, 1961 file photo.

Helen Taft's 1909 inaugural ball gown is part of the 'First Ladies at the Smithsonian' exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington on Dec. 19, 2008.

Laura’s gowns were all beautiful, and even Hillary looked nice in that blue (or purple) gown.

I don’t like those one-shouldered dresses (whatever they’re called); the style didn’t look good on Mrs. 0bama OR on Nancy Reagan.

Personally, I loved Barbara Bush’s gown. The blue velvet was so classy and regal!

On another note, the picture of Tipper confirms what I’ve always suspected, and is reflected in other photos. I don’t think she really likes Al, and seems to just “put up with him.”

And the best thing about it is it comes with its own toilet paper! I just grab a little off the bodice every time I need to tinkle!

Michelle’s:

Somewhere, a roll of toilet paper hangs alone; empty and spent.

NO OFFENSE but this is what Michelle's dress reminds me of...

And the yellow dress and coat earlier in the day looked like heavy thermal drapes, but it was a cold day and she was SMART to dress warm!

Note to Mrs. O: Think Nefertiti, not The Mummy.

Michelle’s dress looks like one of those toilet paper wedding dresses the kids wrap the counsellors in at camp.

You’d think somebody would have told her this dress is intended as a bridal gown for a small, afternoon garden wedding.

I noticed that too. She always seems to be pulling away from him.

Her stylist ought to be kicked to the curb. I can’t believe Mrs. O’s paying good money for those clothes and that advice. She’s got a great figure. I’d dress her in bold colors and sleek, strong styles. No froufrou. Ever. Period.

When I saw the gown I thought of black beans and rice.

No comparison to the 2009 Inaugural ballgown, is there? I found it strange that the Mrs. “O” was clueless as to a train on a ballgown and the difficulty of dancing in it.

I always thought Laura Bush was classily dressed except I’d forgotten how awful that one gown of hers was - the one with the buttons down the front.

Thanks for the pics.

Michelle Obama should fire, then shoot, the designer of that tacky, skanky toilet paper dress. Who convinced her that sagging the fabric over her left breast was attractive? I agree with the above poster that she could wear strong colors in strong shapes, and forget the frou-frou FOREVER.

It looks like a very bad, drugged-out knock off of Nancy Reagan’s gown (which I didn’t care for either). The other dresses were fine.

Geez..they ALL look beautiful. Sometimes gowns just don’t photograph as well as they actually look. That being said...anyone will look better than the Bush girls. They NEVER dressed appropriately for any occassion, and that’s the truth.
