Shame. But sounds somewhat innocuous to me (a "bite"?). Not trustworthy, perhaps, but maybe not out of control.

Small children do not know how to act around a dog, want to pull on their tails or ears, hug them like a stuffed animal ... the little kid probably was staring the dog right in the face, at close range. Try that yourself, with even your own dog, and you might get growled at or even nipped yourself. I’m sorry the kid was bitten, but where was the supervision? The adults were to blame.

There are dogs nowdays that will put up with all of that. They are useless animals in my opinion. Any dog that will put up with all of that is a dog that is useless in every other metric. but that’s the way the people want their dogs nowdays...it seems.

Because the title of the dog breed is “German Shepherd”. A “German shepherd” is a shepherd that is German. Notice the capitalization.

I got bitten in the face by a dachshund when I was around four or five, did exactly that, stuck my face right up to the dog and stared at it. Scared the heck out of me, no stitches though. The dog’s owner felt so bad that he took the dog out back and whipped it for ten minutes. I felt guilty over that. Getting right in a dog’s face is a challenge or a threat in dogworld. Especially to one that is chained or cornered. There aren’t that many breeds that would be good natured about it. A Lab or a Golden would probably have licked his face, but what else?

Where are all the angry articles about cats biting and scratching small children?

Not true... our GSD will let our daughter do anything to him. He's very laid back... but, if you try to harm my daughter, he'll eat you up real bad. Here he's showing his teeth... My couch Here he's with my daughter... Happy puppy On the topic of the story, more info needed before I make an opinion... Mike

Just cuz that dog is good around that girl, dont you for a second think it will do likewise around other kids. Also, there may come a day when that dog decides the girl aint the pack puppy anymore and then tries to put her in the pack pecking order.

keep your guard up.

The parents let their two year old son pet a dog that they knew nothing about, and the dog’s owner wasn’t even present to be asked if it was ok or even safe to do so? What an absolutely stupid thing to do. The parents ought to be charged with child endangerment.

He’ll defend any child or baby animal. I’ve seen this first hand... but I always keep my guard up. I grew up with and have had big dogs for most of my life. Max, our GSD has a very defined sense of right and wrong... at least when it comes to dealing with people. Now, leave food on the counter he’ll try to snatch it if he can.

All breeds really should be capitalized. Perhaps I’m just biased, but that’s how they do it in the AKC world. It helps stand it out, too.

I wouldn’t call it an “angry” article. Just stating the facts. Heck, even the policeman is rather dismissive of it.

Actually, I’d say many dogs WOULD put up with that, but it’s dangerous behavior. My own 1yo is so used to our GS who allows him to do anything, that it’s becoming dangerous. We need to start training him soon to treat dogs with greater respect, because not all are like she.

I agree, they were stupid. Although I would never go as far as charging them. If you think getting a single bite from a dog is bad, think about ripping the child away from the people who’ve cared for him all his life. I never go for that sort of thing unless you’re talking killers or such.

I can beat that. I got bitten in the face by a Chihuahua when I was that age! I did the same thing. I thought, what a cute little puppy. I bet I can give it a KISS. NOT! Chewed the inside of my mouth to pieces! I hated that dog from then on. And I LOVE ANIMALS!

The breed name is German Shepherd Dog. This is Major, a Long Coated GSD, linebred from Sieger VA1 Zamb von der Wienerau.
