Back in Britain after escaping the 'Diana witch hunt', the man who almost married her reveals the REAL reason their affair was doomed

RICHARD KAY and GEOFFREY LEVY 18th July 2009

A love lost: Hasnat Khan first met Diana in 1995, when he was a young heart surgeon at the Royal Brompton Hospital

Every day as he climbs into his elderly BMW and makes the 40-minute drive to the hospital where he works as an NHS heart surgeon, Hasnat Khan feels a contentment and professional satisfaction that he knows he came close to losing.

Although born and qualified as a doctor in Lahore, Hasnat Khan views Britain as his home. His friends are here. How ironic, then, that if his deep love affair with Princess Diana had ended in marriage as she wanted, he would have felt compelled to take her back to live in Pakistan.

For only there, he believed, could he have escaped the distractions and turmoil that followed her everywhere in the West, and where he could have been allowed to get on with the only other passion to rival the Princess - his medical work.

Khan, who will be 50 next month, left England in October, 2007 just as the belated inquest into Diana's death in Paris in August 1997, was opening in London. He didn't give evidence, although a detailed statement which he made in 2004 to investigators was read out.

Sorry, but the woman was a Lefty, unstable, rebellious slot.
It is tragic when somebody dies, but please do not make her into what she never was.

The only decent man she ever hung out with and he (being decent) was repelled by the celebrity circus. Could it have worked. We’ll never know.

Does it matter?

Yes. The article was about Khan. It was only about Diana peripherally.

Oh, I don’t know. This guy isn’t telling tales and making money off of her corpse. He seems to know what discretion is.

Diana, attractive and wronged though she was, did more harm than good. I so hope her son William is able to redeem the monarchy; Charles is a hopeless case.

In her defense (sort of), Diana was betrayed from the beginning by that snot-nosed weasel husband. I was extremely disappointed in the Queen for not putting a stop to Charles' and Camilla's betrayal, or at least denouncing it, and for the entire royal family's apparent dereliction of duty as Defenders of the Faith with regard to the role of marriage among Christians. Their unconcern about their duties as role models for the common folk was a disgrace.

This muslim heart surgeon appears to have more common decency than all the tatty royals put together. I'd say he dodged a bullet.

Interesting article. Especially: He works purely for the NHS and does no private consultancy. He'll never get rich that way. Not in Britain, anyway.
