First grader Zachary Christie was recently suspended for bringing a Cub Scout camping utensil with him to school. The utensil combines a fork, spoon and a knife into one tool and Christie wanted to use it at lunchtime. His school has a "zero-tolerance" policy on weapons and the camping tool violates the district's rule. He is facing 45 days in the district's reform school. Did school officials go too far?

“A” students bring whatever weapons they want.

Let the riffraff be afraid.

Absurdity RULES. Bad Boy! Common reason doesn’t exist in most schools.

LOL! Those folding tools with spoon, fork and butter knife have been used by Boy and Girl Scouts for many decades.

If Zach really want to kill someone in school, he’d have brought a peanut butter sandwich

sarc

The important this is that we manufacture enough non-black criminals to be "fair."

Zero tolerance rules in public schools are not really intended to protect the students. They are intended to protect school administrators from liability. They also are intended to excuse school administrators from exercising any form of judgment or common sense. If the zero tolerance rule dictates an outcome, it can’t be the administrator’s fault. Of course, a chimpanzee can follow a zero tolerance rule.

[he’d have brought a peanut butter sandwich]

You put in a “sarc,” but you would not be that far off. In the last school my kids went to, they instituted a new policy that said if you sent your kids to school with a peanut based product, the bag had to be marked in big letters and your child would eat on the stage, away from all the other kids to avoid allergic reactions.

If you failed to mark the bag, your child could receive “In-School Suspension” due to “assault” on other kids! I am not kidding!!

The policy has since changed, but needless to say, it took came into being because most parents were NOT involved in the school district. Luckily, parents came around. I tell people, if you are sitting by when it happens, then you LET IT HAPPEN!!

Society has went so far left with political correctness that we don’t look at the individual to judge anything these days. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?
We don’t see individuals anymore we only see groups. How sad has this become?

[They are intended to protect school administrators from liability.]

BINGO! We have a winner!

Of course, it was sold to the parents and the public as...wait for it....wait....FOR THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN!

Huge, brown BS flag on that one!!! Of course, they now use BS stats to show that “violence is down” on campus so the zero tolerance is obviously working - of course they don’t compare apples to apples, they compare weapon-related fights to the overall numbers which is ALWAYS skewed!

It's time to start the SSA (School Security Administration). Install metal detectors at the entrances of all schools. Nobody enters without being scanned. All kids, teachers, and school visitors will need to remove backbacks, books, coats, shoes, and other items and place them on the x-ray scanner belt. Contraband searches will be mandatory. Behavior profilers will pick kids that act odd for special additional screening. Kids and teachers will no longer be able to bring their lunch into the building. They may only bring a one quart bag with up to 4 small bottles (3 ounces) containing mouth wash, koolaid or other beverage. No more matches or lighters allowed.

Is this what the school districts want? How about confiscating all tire irons from teachers cars in the parking lot. They could use those implements to beat kids you know. Somebody should use them on the administrators to beat common sense back into them.

The polling is so confusing that only 96% of respondents agree that school officials went too far.
62% Yes. A 'zero tolerance' policy leaves school officials no room to make decisions on a case-by-case basis.

34% Yes. Zachary is a young boy who did nothing wrong.

2% No. It seems harmless but what if the knife in the utensil had hurt another student?

2% No. This sends a message to every student in the district including those in high school.

<1% I'm not sure.

They left out the correct answer: Yes: This is one of the stupidest, most mind numbingly assine decision of the Third Millenium.

Yeah, a coupla months in state custody'll straighten that little snot-nosed punk out. Looks dangerous to me. We'll wipe that smirk off his face.

Agreed, but yes and no are so final, just more than our delicate society can stand these days. And what kind of ditz votes I’m Not Sure? Why do they even waste their time, or is it a joke? Weird!

Another reason for tort reform. School boards are establishing zero tolerance policies so that if little Johnnie brings his cub scout mess kit to show and tell and little Suzie gets a scratch on her finger from it, her parents won’t sue the school for 10 million dollars.
