The First Men And Women From The Canary Islands Were Berbers
Science News ^ | Wednesday, October 21, 2009 | Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology via Eurekalert

A team of Spanish and Portuguese researchers has carried out molecular genetic analysis of the Y chromosome (transmitted only by males) of the aboriginal population of the Canary Islands to determine their origin and the extent to which they have survived in the current population. The results suggest a North African origin for these paternal lineages which, unlike maternal lineages, have declined to the point of being practically replaced today by European lineages... Although contribution is now mainly European, scientists state that North African and Sub-Saharan contribution was higher in the 17th and 18th centuries. The explanation as to why there is a difference between the lineages of men and women from the Canary Islands stems from the diverse contributions of parental populations, and, above all, as a result of European colonisation.

It couldn’t have anything to do with centuries of aggressive slave raiding by North Africans long before the evil europeans got into that colonizing shtick, could it.

The early inhabitants of eh Canary Islands were long suspected of being Berbers. Berbers are a Caucasian group but they have had large influxes of sub-Saharan black blood due to Islamic slave traders.

One of the Berber groups are the Tauregs. Taureg means “accursed of God” in Arabic as they were originally non-Islamic and only converted to Islam fairly recently. The form of Islam they practice is very different from mainstream Islam. The men go veiled, not the women and they have a reputation of being fierce fighters.

Getting back to the Canaries, the Spanish exterminated the native population, the Guanches, to whom this article obviously refers in a particularly brutal manner.

The Guanches buried their dead by mummification and there were various different tribes of them speaking different dialects on each island. They were said to have blonde hair, like the ancient Libyans who were also of pure Berber blood.
