Blagojevich: Play ALL wiretaps in court
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | February 10, 2010 | NATASHA KORECKI

Posted on 02/10/2010 10:57:57 AM PST by opentalk

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich — famously caught on tape calling a U.S. Senate seat appointment (bleepin’) golden — said today he wants to make sure that the jury that will hear the corruption case against him gets to hear that recording.

And Blagojevich, rather than back away from the tapes that attracted national attention, said he is “laying down the gauntlet” and also wants his future jury to hear everything else he was caught saying on secret FBI wiretaps.

“I’ve instructed my lawyers to petition the court, petition so that every second, every minute, every hour that the government secretly taped me is provided to both sides to be heard and played in court,” Blagojevich said minutes after pleading not guilty in a federal courtroom in Chicago to a new indictment in his case.

“And I challenge the government, I challenge the government: If you are on the side of truth and justice as you say you are, and if this was a crime spree like you claim it was, then don’t hide behind technicalities,” Blagojevich said. “Play all the tapes. Play all the tapes. Play the truth, and play the whole truth.”

Later, Blagojevich’s lawyer, Sam Adam Jr., pulled back a bit from that, saying that the former governor wants every tape played that’s relevant to his corruption case.

“We are saying either side can play any minute of any tape that they wish to play,” Adam said.

Blagojevich said he thinks he can contest the original finding that there was probable cause to believe a crime was committed, which allowed the wiretaps to be placed in the first place.

Still, he pleaded not guilty to a revised indictment today, said he will waive any challenge to the playing of the tapes and will ask that the tapes be played at his June corruption trial in federal court in Chicago.

“I enter a plea of innocent to each and every charge,” the former governor, dressed in a dark suit and red tie, told U.S. District Judge James Zagel.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office had no comment on Blagojevich’s remarks.

Previoiusly, prosecutors have alluded to the hundreds of hours of recordings that have been publicly viewed as a point of strength in their case.

Last week, a federal grand jury in Chicago re-indicted Blagojevich, adding eight new counts to his corruption case. That makes 24 charges the ex-governor now faces.

The new charges were crafted to keep the case on track even if the U.S. Supreme Court decides in a separate case to gut the federal “honest services” law that also was a key to the original charges against Blagojevich.

The former governor faces accusations that include trying to sell an appointment ti fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Obama.

Other allegations include charges that Blagojevich tried to extort Obama White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, then a congressman representing Chicago’s Northwest Side. Blagojevich is accused of holding up grant money to a school in Emanuel’s district because Emanuel’s brother hadn't held a campaign fund-raiser for Blagojevich.

I actually agree with him

I am of the growing opinion that he would not play ball with the right people (giving Obambi;s job to someone they wanted) so they bagged him

The statments made about ‘selling’ the office can be construed in a political office where horse trading is often done

DISCLAIMER: I think he is a freaking idiot and IL deserves what they got for electing him. It only took 40 years for the liberal democraps to turn a booming auto industry location into a filthy cesspool.

—Federal authorities used a video camera to keep an eye on everyone coming and going from Gov. Blagojevich’s campaign offices — and to keep track of who was talking on the bugs secretly planted inside. —

* Harris mentions how such a deal would conceal a quid pro quo

* Blagojevich mentions that he does not want to be Governor anymore

* Blagojevich mentions how his wife is more qualified to sit on corporate boards than a “specifically named individual,” who is most probably Michelle Obama
* Harris and Blagojevich remind advisors of the problem of Blagojevich’s financial security, and Blagojevich indicates that without something in return he will not appoint Jarrett
* Harris broaches the three way deal with Obama, Blagojevich and the SEIU involving “Change to Win;” such a deal will occur in two years

* They agree this is easier for Obama than for Obama to appoint Blagojevich to a position
Conversation 19:
* Blagojevich discusses the open Senate seat with Advisor B
* Blagojevich discusses the option of a 501(c)(4) with Advisor B, who says the “Change for Win” option is better, for from Obama’s perspective, there would be fewer “fingerprints” of Obama’s involvement
* Advisor B mentions that “Change for Win” is a better option, as there will not be stories in four years of how Obama bought Blagojevich off
* Blagojevich mentions how a 501(c)(4) will exist in two years, while “Change to Win” may not
Conversation 20:
* Blagojevich speaks with a different DC advisor about the open Senate seat

11/13/08 Durbin asks Blago for a meeting, voices Duckworth as a favorite.
Jarrett accepts cabinet post.
“After several pages of detailing those machinations, the criminal complaint takes an abrupt turn, describing NO WIRETAPS for a period of THREE WEEKS. The complaint says Blagojevich had “numerous conversations” about the Senate seat during that period, but it doesn’t detail any.”
Conversation 24:
* Blagojevich and Harris discuss the open Senate seat
* Blagojevich tells Harris he wants to speak directly to “President-elect Advisor” about the 501(c)(4) option and how it could be bankrolled
* Blagojevich says he wants “President-elect Advisor” to receive word of the 501(c)(4) option on that day, for when “President-elect Advisor” asks about the open fifth Congressional district Seat, it will be in the advisor’s mind

Conversation 25:
* Blagojevich and Advisor A discuss open Senate seat
* Blagojevich mentions how he hopes the 501(c)(4) is in the head of the “President-elect Advisor,” but he hopes it is implanted in that person’s mind in a manner in which it is not connected to the open Senate seat or the open House seat

* Blagojevich and Advisor A discuss open Senate seat
* Blagojevich asks Advisor A to contact Individual A and ask Individual A to contact “President-elect Advisor” about the 501(c)(4)
* Advisor A asks if it should be mentioned outside of the open Senate and House seats, and Blagojevich says yes
* Advisor A asks if Blagojevich wants Individual A to contact “President-elect Advisor” as Blagojevich thinks there is still “life” in Valerie Jarrett
* Blagojevich thinks there is still life in Jarrett, but he also thinks there are other options

"every hour that the government secretly taped me is provided to both sides to be heard and played in court,”

Is every hour relevant? If not then no reason to bore the jury with it.

I’m all for it, too...but wasn’t his office broken into awhile back? What records/evidence was lost? Hopefully, there’s enough there to lead back to boy wonder.

Can I really hope that impeachment proceedings will be the outcome? You betcha!

It’s like a falling out among thieves. Fascinating to watch, although you’d not want to be anywhere near any of them. Blag is right to take the call-their-bluff strategy. See if they’ve got the stones to have it all come out. He knows where the bodies are buried and they know he knows. He probably knows he doesn’t have anything to lose at this point. He knows the worst can happen. At least if they vanish him from the planet, he’ll have some measure of revenge. The Chicago Way, indeed.
