I haven’t seen much that shows Islam to be a collectivist religion. There may be some aspects of it that are, but liberation is purely about the collective and not about the individual.

I hadn't thought about it that way. Come to think of it, the differences may be more rhetorical than real. The practical outcome of collectivist systems is the establishment of a strict ruling order, supposedly temporary on the way to a classless utopia. That ruling class, the apparatchiks in Russia, directs those below.
In Islam, the ruling class is theologically based, but in many ways the effect is the same. The higher up on the tree you are, the more powerful your fatwas, and the non-clerical have to abide by it. The courts, too, are ruled as much by whimsy and connection as by law, under both systems.
Both systems are totalitarian, with an emphasis on "total", ven though the narrative is different.
The Queen of Jordan wears western clothes. She dons a scarf when entering a mosque. Princess Lalla Salma of Morocco also wears western clothes.

Yes, and it is also known that these royal wives spend a fortune on clothing when they visit the West, so I don’t see any contradiction between Obama’s being a Muslim and MO’s style of dress.
In any case, I doubt very much that he has the ability to tell her what to do. That said, I think that one of the things that may be keeping Obama from making a proclamation that he is a Muslim is that Michelle probably is not a Muslim and doesn’t want to be one. This is not because she’s a Christian, but simply because even she must realize that women are nothing in Islamic society, and while she might be able to continue to dress the way she wants, she probably wouldn’t be able to swan around and do all the other things she likes to do.

I worked with two Muslim women a few years ago. One, judging by her accent, was obviously an immigrant, and wore Western style business clothing. The other was American raised, judging by her accent, and wore a scarf, long sleeved blouses, and long skirts.
I went to college with a woman from Saudi Arabia. At college she wore jeans and t-shirts and had her hair down.
Her father came to visit from time to time and wore a suit.
She told me that there was an unspoken assumption between the two of them that she would always be veiled if she was back home or if they were meeting other relatives, but that "when in Rome" applied with strangers overseas.
