How could echolocation possibly work on a gameboy? The sound waves would just bounce off a flat screen, the objects moving on the screen are just two dimensional.

Was thinking exactly the same thing.

What the kid was probably doing was enjoying the different sounds that would emanate from the game system, depending upon what buttons he pressed. It kept him entertained and perhaps fooled many people into believing that he could actually interact with the game the same as sighted people.
