Prince William Gives Kate Middleton His Mother's Engagement Ring

The engagement ring given to Kate Middleton by her fiancé, Prince William, belonged to his mother, Princess Diana.

The ring is the stunning 18 carat blue sapphire and diamond ring his father, the Prince of Wales , gave his mother in February of 1981.

In an interview with Fox News, Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell said the ring will be introduced to a new generation through Kate Middleton.

"This was my way of making sure that my mother didn't miss out on today," William said as the couple posed for photographers inside St. James's Palace.

The wedding is set to take place next spring or summer in London. According to several reports, Prince William asked for Middleton’s hand in marriage while the two vacationed in Kenya.

I understand it, but I don’t know. Hopefully it has more symbolism for him than just that miserable marriage his parents were stuck in.

Shouldn’t this be titled

“Rich effeminate prince gives expensive ring that was paid for by British Commoners to millionaire fiance.”?

I’ve always been somewhat amazed by the lack of spirituality of both Charles and Diana.

Charles is out sampling the cafeteria of religious experiences and seemed to have no concept of real Christianity (despite being raised to be “The Defender of the Faith!”, and Diana seemed to be a functional agnostic (despite reports she was looking into Islam). They were a troubled couple. Both seemed to have new age “greeny” tendencies.

Perhaps losing his Mom brought William to a deeper place. I hope so.

It’s nice to see the tradition, and I hope they have a happy and blessed marraige.

OK, they’re a nice couple.

Now get ready for non-stop royal marriage coverage.

The royal family doesn’t have much of a record for successful marriages.

Let’s hope that these two do better.

Where’s the picture of the ring? Or failing that the picture of Kate in a bikini (OK so I’m living vicariously here)

You know how there are famous diamonds are cursed, let us hope this is not the case here. I would like to see William as the king, not Charles.

How well I remember the ring! I was a very young woman when Diana married and got up early in the morning to watch the wedding.

I remember there was a rumor that Diana got a pick of engagement rings (or more likely, stones) and she picked out the largest sapphire! But, undoubtedly, it is a beautiful ring. I hope William’s wife wears it with more love and happiness than poor ole Diana.

Sure I do; The “ROYALS” appropriated propety long LONG ago. They continue to claim ownership and enjoy the income from it as well as pocketing their “ROYAL” allowances.

Decades ago I thought the Brits were well on their way to kicking the ROYAlS out by their royal arses, but it never happened. Shame.

re: Royals and their MONEY:

It is FAR worse than I ever imagined:

“Windows are opening on the British royal family’s wealth”

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/15/world/europe/15iht-royal.1.6661422.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

In most free countries it would be called theft.

There is a difference between the crown jewels and the family’s private jewelry. Please explain about the “appropriated property.” Are you saying Prince William stole the ring? Or that Prince Charles did? All you know is that you hate the monarchy.

Property is theft! (La propriété, c'est le vol!), a slogan coined by French anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon in 1840. Didn't know he still had followers.
