Sad story. These things happen every day. Had a semi tire tread take out my windshield in Fri. evening rush hour traffic on a busy Phoenix freeway. No warning at all. I was moving along in the 70 mph traffic when I saw it fall onto my hood. Almost pushed the entire windshield in. It must have launched 50 ft. straight up after it hit me. Unknown where it landed next. I glanced in the mirror but never saw it land. Was too busy maintaining my lane and trying to get over and off the packed freeway! I did, and did not panic and crash in doing so. No minor feat I assure you, NASCAR fans would have been proud!

Had a semi tire tread take out my windshield Good save man!
up north we call em "road gators"
mostly occur in hot weather when recapped tires lose their tread
especially scary if you're driving a roller skate like my Saturn

Presence of mind is a valuable commodity. It will save your life more often than not.
Good on you for keeping your cool.
