Paul Calle, Postage Stamp Designer, Is Dead at 82

Calle has designed more than 30 stamps in as many years. Among this noted artist’s many distinctions is the First Man on the Moon series of stamps that he designed which sold more than 150 billion. Other Calle stamps include those honoring Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jesse Owens, Helen Keller, Robert Frost, Douglas MacArthur, Pearl Buck and Frederic Remington, in addition to stamps depicting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the International Year of the Child in 1979 and promoting causes such as volunteerism and encouraging early cancer detection. Calle also designed the U.S. Postal Service’s first twin stamp to commemorate the successful Gemini Space Walk.

Calle’s portrayal of the West is not as a romantic adventure but as a realistic challenge. He has made a personal commitment to portray America's past with the same sense of history that guided his hand in depicting our nation's space explorations as an artist for NASA's Fine Art Program.

Calle is a master of both the oil painting and the pencil drawing. His drawings — often very large — show incredible control and sensitivity; they have the quality of fine etchings. Few contemporary artists have attained greater mastery of the pencil than Calle, who shares his skills in his book, The Pencil, a record of his odyssey as "an artist with a pencil." It has been translated into French, Chinese and Russian. Another book of his art, Paul Calle: An Artist's Journey, was awarded the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Award for Fine Arts in 1993.

The title was actually from the NYT obit, but, I wasn’t sure if I could even link to their site so I just did a couple of searches and found the Mill Pond site.

It unfortunate that the nyt obit never even mentioned hos frontiersmen paintings and sketches. Kind of sad that they left out so much of his life.

The fairies than run the stamp selection committee at the US Postal Service have neglected to honor the service and sacrifice of our service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the past, there have been stamps for Korea, Vietnam, WWII series, and Gulf War, but nothing in the past ten years for Afghanistan and Iraq.

Instead the Post Office creates billions of worthless stamps honoring fairies, cartoon characters, AIDS, communists, foreigners, and Islam.

You can make your own personalized stamps at zazzle.com. They are running a promotion now until Thursday if you have a photo image to upload from your computer. Sorry, but no celebs, politicians, or copyrighted images from the internet.

Not that it means anything, but we just received a Christmas card from an English relative with a Winnie the Pooh stamp.

Sad.
In my top 5 favorite contemporary artists.
I have a large book of Bible History illustrated by him- his pencil work is masterful - and totally unique.

One of my friends was one of his models, and was even depicted on the back of Reader’s Digest.

OH, that's one of my favorites - I love his Mountain Men and Native American paintings - Don't know which I'd rather have been, a mountain man, a Native American or to've taken myself west to paint these subjects.

I'm a portrait artist and was fortunate enough to've lived in the Berkshires at the right time, getting invaluable critiquing from Norman Rockwell, Robert Brackman, and lessons from great artists, including William Shultz.

Robert Bateman is an all time favorite also. I have a friend here, an International Award wining scrimner, that studied under Bateman.

Another of my favorites: Frank McCarthy.

Now I am getting itchy to get my paint pots out!

No I didn't know his son was also an artist - thanks for the tip - looking him up, I see he learned well from his dad!

makes we once again feel guilty that I didn't teach my kids and g’kids that also have the talent. I'm thanking of doing a series of lessons for them via the Internet - make up for it a bit?

Just beautiful!

Yes, you should do a site with tips. I think I really appreciate good sketches and oils etc, because I can’t do it. I think a lot of it is a gift one is born with. Sure you can learn to improve it, but, you need something to improve upon. jmo

I think silent_jonny has a real talent, too. Do you have images somewhere to be seen?
