Ignorant Government Officials
Fox News | 1/18/11 | poll

Posted on 01/20/2011 7:37:24 AM PST by estrogen

Amazing we have a government at all

TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: branchesofgovt; electoralcollege; knowledge; vanity
I heard on Fox News that 49% of the congress couldn't name the three branches of government. Also that a lesser percentage thought the electoral college was an actual college. And these fools are making our laws? It should be a prerequisite that all elected officials take a civics test......if they can't pass it, they don't have the HONOR of serving.

Anyone want to bet that the 49% is mostly composed of D’s.

Too bad for the rest of the country that the Demographics of that poll will never see the light of day.

Sadly, the people who voted them in are even dumber. I would love to see that all voters must pass a current events test before being allowed to vote. Yeah, I know it could never happen, especially when some dead people still vote. (In Lake County, IN, some dead people voted twice!)

I have no doubt of this....None!

I stated this is something I heard on Fox News yesterday. Don’t know who did the poll.

Who would write the test? Remember the poll that came out a few weeks ago where FNC voters were determined to be grossly misinformed. I think the test would be similar.

If I had my druthers, only tax-paying property owners would be allowed to vote.

But I'm a political fossil.

I’d be happy to volunteer. I think a small committee consisting of 4 members from all parties at the state level could do it.

That was the intent of the framers of the Constitution. I think a reasonable alternative would be that only people directly paying income taxes get to vote.

We can only vote for those who offer themselves for office, those who run. The Left, employing the politics of personal destruction through the media, make it harder for us to have good conservative candidates. If a conservative can be shown that he cheated on his wife thirty years ago we bounce them. Liberals can run prostitution rings out of their apartments, Barney Frank, lockup rent controlled apartments for their own use, Charlie Rangel, and be rapists, Bill Clinton, and the media and the Liberals ignore it as long as they can get elected.

The Democrats who don't pay their taxes are too numerous to list but if a conservative makes an honest mistake the Liberals and the media demand his head. We have a much longer row to hoe than the Liberals.

I assume you are talking about real estate. Everyone owns property of some sort.

Alas, all very true, but still no excuse for not trying.

I doubt they’d let “mentally ill,” anti-government extremists such as yourself help write the test.

Mentally ill...me? Also, I'm not really anti-gov’t, as I know a stable gov’t is requisite to a viable economic system. In a nutshell, I support the gov’t in providing public goods (e.g., goods the private sector can't or won't supply) and policing property rights (e.g., a legal system, standing military, etc.). However, I feel the current gov’t at all levels exceeds those Constitutional directives and would love to see them back out of those places where they shouldn't operate.

You know that and I know that, but I doubt the ruling class sees it that way.

The poll was conducted by Intercollegiate Studies Institute. There was a thread on FR with a link to an aol article that had information on the poll and gave a sample of questions contained on the test. I think I saw the thread on the 14th, The aol article was titled Opinion: Elected Officials Flunk Constitution Quiz.
