he online dating sites Match.com and OkCupid can now add another happy couple to their list of successful matches: themselves.
IAC's Match.com, which owns a family of dating sites including Chemistry.com, People Media, and SinglesNet, purchased OkCupid for $50 million on Wednesday. Unlike the subscriber-only Match.com, OkCupid offers its services for free, supports itself through advertising, and generally attracts younger singles who connect with the site's hip, Digital Age ethos.
What does the corporate marriage mean for the future of online dating?

The purchase of lubricants by bloggers will fluctuate.
After some re-branding, the market will stabilize.
Match just finished assimilating Yahoo personals.
I predict, Match will quickly impose fees on OkCupid and then merge it with Match.com. I don’t see them keeping it as free, because it competes directly against Match.com.
What doe it mean for online sex?
I had thought they might do that at first blush, but the thing is is that the site is a different market segment than match. They might try tiered memberships to monetize things, but what people want is an unfettered, free site with lots of non-dating social network activity. While they may be able to pick off okcupid, they can’t buy-out the “free” model - another site will pick up the slack. So I’d think they’d do the acquisition to win the free market segment rather than get rid of OKC.
As long as they didn’t buy bootycall.com, Lazamataz is okay
Why would anyone date online? I can’t believe these sites actually make money. I suppose there must be a couple of dysfunctional people who use them. Freepers whether single or not are too intelligent to care anyway..
lol. I might know that guy... kidding
I met my wife, also a FReeper, on Match.com.
Good for you. I see absolutely nothing wrong with people meeting through a dating agency. Certainly better than hooking up at a bar.
I can only say I met my wife on CatholicSingles.com (we were both widowed), and we just celebrated our tenth anniversary. It's been a very happy ten years for both of us. Sometimes on-line dating does work.
A couple of dysfunctional people...? You must be a poor investor.
“I don?t see them keeping it as free, because it competes directly against Match.com.”
They must be facing stiff competition.
It’s hard to find a find a good girl. With online dating I set the parameters on who I want to meet in my case - when I’m ready to date again I want a conservative, slender, Chrisitan, blonde I’m also partial to redheads or brunettes. :P
I’m surprised that Jiim Robinson never started “Freep-harmony”.
Just think of the Free Republic ads.
“My handle is XX and I really wanted to meet a conservative man; if it wasn’t for Freep-harmony. XY and I would never have found such a funny and intelligent freeper. We’re so compatible, we finish eachother’s postings!”
In amusement,
I have read that in the Philippines, a man looking for a wife lets his acquaintances know he is looking for a wife, and they all assist him in the search. A healthy, communal project. In the US, and the West, he will join a men’s group at his HMO clinic to whine about his life, hiding the real reasons for his misery, or sign up for the likes of Match.com and plentyoffish.com expecting and getting miserable results.
Congratulations. I wish you and your wife all the best.
