An old symbol with renewed popularity among tea partiers and other conservatives could soon appear on Oklahoma license plates.
The Revolutionary War era Gadsden Flag, featuring a coiled rattlesnake on a yellow field and the words "Don't Tread on Me," was among the eight special tag themes approved by the Legislature this year. A specific design for the tag won't be approved until the minimum 100 orders are received by the Oklahoma Tax Commission.
The Gadsden Flag has been much in evidence at tea party events over the past few years, but Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore, said he did not have the tea party in mind when he proposed the tag.
"People may interpret this as something for the tea party, but really it is for constitutional conservatives," Terrill said.
Oklahoma has more than 230 special tags promoting schools, organizations and causes ranging from adoption to the Zeta Phi Beta social sorority.
Tags cost $15 more than the usual taxes and fees, except for those providing financial support to the organization depicted. Those tags cost an additional $35.
No group or organization will receive financial benefit from the Gadsden tag, or from three others approved this year: BMW Club of America, Ovarian Cancer and Deer Creek School District.
Tags approved this year that do include a financial support component are Pancreatic Cancer Research, Alzheimer's Research, Hospice and Palliative Care and Juvenile Diabetes Research.
Each new design has 180 days from the effective date of the authorizing legislation - in this case, Nov. 1 - to attract at least 100 orders.
The most popular special tag is the University of Oklahoma with 6,136 issued last year, followed by Wildlife Conservation with 4,781.

Me too...since 1975.
Driver only has $20 of ammunition.
I was going to get the Alzheimer’s flag but forgot.
The difference is that the TEA partiers are late to the party. This started in earnest when Trent Lott decided to share power with the Demonrats.
My son gave me that sticker a few years ago, but I didn’t know what it was called. Thanks.
