What does one do with a clumsey daughter?
self | 9/05/2011 | self

I was insructing my Daughter into theymystries of CanningPickels. She is a Graduate of Culinary School along with several other degrees which added nothing to her employabilty.

I bought a cheap mandolin to insure consistant thickness of the cukes we were slicing, she proceeded to cut the tip of a finger off, The blood, the blood, after doing first aide I sent her off to the ER.

Is this normal? I mean cooks deal with sharp stuff, how many fingers lie at the bottom of our salads?

Put a helmet on her head and send her back to school on the short bus.....

Of course, pin a note to her dress before letting her on the bus....

That is a tough racket if you are good, long hours and hard work.

Yes, and he loves every minute of it. :-)

My Grandson, I am afraid, will be in the same category. I was replacing some doors in his dads house and had a hard time keeping him from the chop saw.

I have and use two mandolins, and I do not let anyone, even experienced cooks, near them. The couple of times I have, they have ended up cut because they will not take them seriously. I may start out with a potato without the protector, but I only cut a few slices and then I attach the guide-shield.

It's amazing how the mandolin will bring out the stupidity in some cooks.

It could be worse... your daughter could be Chaz Bono. “Don’t worry... be happy”! ;-)

Maybe you should buy an expensive, sturdier one.

Spent two years in the Infantry plus 40 years of CPR, the first Question I always asked the instructors, “What do you do in the case of a traumatic Amputation?”

Bad Italian music keeps the pickles consistent?

Freezer pickles

4 cups thinly sliced cukes

2 cups thinly sliced onions

1 TSP canning salt

1 TBSP water

Let stand overnight in fridge

Next Day

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup cider vinegar

1 TSP WHOLE pickling spice

1 TSP celery seeds

Mix with cukes and onions and put in containers.

Freeze at once

Sometimes I use the little plastic snack bags...sometimes lunch bags...sometimes small plastic containers.

I love taking out a snack bag for me alone...

When they're still a bit icey, they're awesome.Double it if you wish.

Any chance she gets nervous working on tasks around dad?

Hmmmm? Anxiety does lead to a decrement in the performance of recently acquired skills...

My daughter has worked temp jobs as a Chef or a Food Service Manager. If you can cook keep your blood out of the food as they taught you.

I’ve seen a lot of chefs cut themselves on The Food Network, Top Chef, etc. The chance of cutting yourself is worse with a dull knife.
