Although there are many causes for tinnitus (noise induced hearing loss, head trauma, drugs, etc.), the overwhelming consensus on subjective tinnitus is that it is a "brain" problem, not an "ear" problem.
I can see tapping possibly affecting the inner ear fluid, but I don't see how it can result in a reorganization of hearing neurology, undoing the reorganzation that causes the tinnitus percept according to Jastreboff:

From what I’ve been told by several doctors, if you have the physical damage, you may as well learn to live with it because it ain’t going away. I once had doctors in an emergency room tell me after I dove off the roof into the backyard swimming pool and pranged my back but good (all in my stupid youth ...! But at least I used the butts of cigarettes as earplugs when I went shooting! ;^) ... that I had strained my back and would not be able to do anything but lie down for at least a week. Went to a chiropractor the next day and was waiting tables that night.
Just sayin ...

This ( the physical thumping or whatever) has turned the cicada in my left/bad ear into a whispering cricket in a tin metal barn. My good ear has lessened noticably. That cicada is whining and not screaming.
