We are commemorating one of the most famous ships in the world in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the demise of the Titanic said Orla Saul. To bring this special and unique story to life we are delighted to have Susie Miller over from Ireland. Miller runs Titanic Tours in Belfast and is here today to tell us the most intriguing, poignant and personal story about Titanic.

The 100th anniversary coincides with the opening of the Titanic visitor centre on 31st March in Belfast. Some people don’t know that the Titanic was built in Belfast said Ms. Saul. There’s a unique connection with the city on so many levels and this new £97 million visitor has been built to recognise Titanic’s extraordinary legacy.

The Titanic Belfast Festival runs from 31 March through until 22 April 2012 and includes plays, tours, exhibitions, talks, a laser show and a major MTV outdoor event all themed around Titanic as well as commemorations on the actual anniversary of the ship’s sinking (14-15 April).

Considering the state of the Irish economy has anyone pointed out the irony of Tourism Ireland celebrating this anniversary?

PS: I know first hand it's a touchy subject, but last time I checked Belfast is still part of the United Kingdom.

If you can't hear the sound very well in the video noted above, you might find this telling by Susie Millar of The Two Pennies easier to follow. Her great-grandfather, Thomas Millar, worked at Belfast's Harland & Wolff Shipyard and died at the age of 33 on the maiden voyage of Titanic.

The fascination endures nearly 100 years later with all things regarding Titanic. In July 2001, Robert Williams (on the right), visited the ship's debris field on a 2-1/2 mile dive.

Here are his theories, which I am neither supporting nor denying. They're posted as part of this thread since the topic of what happened and when did it happen continues to draw interest nearly a century later. And, or course, there are the inevitable "what if" scenarios, actions that could have been taken to either prevent or mitigate the disaster.
