I thought that, too, and too well dressed. However, from the story, he wandered out in August of 2011, and has probably had a few meals since then.
They are publicizing it now to try to identify him, which they have not done yet.

Humans have been able to live in the woods and thrive for thousands of years.. If his father knew what he was doing there is no reason for them to starve.
