Two BILLION people watch Usain Bolt's win... but none of them in America
UK Daily Mail ^ | August 6, 2012 | Staff

An estimated two billion people around the world saw Jamaica's Usain Bolt thrash his rivals to win gold in the men's 100m final - but none of them were in the U.S., as NBC declined to broadcast the historic moment live. Bolt sailed through the semi-finals before successfully defending his Olympic title - against a field that included three Americans - at 4.50pm EDT. But, not for the first time this Games, NBC took the controversial decision to hold off broadcasting the hugely popular event until prime time, leaving millions of track and field fans outraged.

Except for part of the opening ceremonies have not watched one second of coverage. One of the reasons I have given up watching the Olympics is NBCs horrid coverage. The sad part is NBC is getting record ratings so it will continue to give the middle finger to sports fans to cater their coverage, yes I am prepared to be attacked, to women. For example, my mom called me and was so excited about the Olympics and how she and her firends talked about it at the water cooler. She was schocked when I told her I have not watched one minute.

It’s all available live, online, and without NBC’s greasy fingers all over it. A simple internet search will point anyone who wants to avoid NBC’s ridiculous (non)-coverage in the right direction.

NBC has always chosen to delay broadcast of “headliner” events for their prime-time program. They pay a lot of money for the broadcast rights, and they want to draw eyeballs to the screen during the biggest advertising dollar windows.

Anyone with a computer, or a smartphone (assuming you have the right TV carrier) could have watched the race live. I am pleasantly surprised the lengths that NBC has gone to allow people to watch as much of the Olympics live as they like, while they continue to use their broadcast and cable networks to show a more traditional Olympic experience.

Agreed. My wife is loving the coverage because she enjoys all the “back stories” and fluff. It’s easier to catch the notable events as highlights.

Nothing
But
Communists

They are more interested in the marxist in the WH. They’re afraid they might miss him playing golf or going to one of his fundraisers.

The coverage has been the worst ever. They should not be allowed to broadcast the olympics again.

This isn't the Olympics, it is an athletic "Queen For A Day" tear-jerk-a-thon.

Which is standard fare for the Nothing But Crud network and its one and only commentator Bob Costas. Is there anyone else who works at NBC?

How many sports moments have been skipped in order to show a 5 minute mini-crockumentary of how much an athlete has "had to overcome just to be here" and then had to endure an interview with Costas?

And seriously, Olympic tennis with people who have multiple grand slam wins on the pro tour as the competitors? One month after Wimbledon?

Plus the tat-laden thugs of the NBA playing "The World" on a goofy looking "in the paint" zone?

And Jim Thorpe had to give up all of his awards because he played baseball for $6 a game.

How could they show the 100 meter men’s when they had to show the entire women’s marathon? All 2 1/2 hours of it, give me a break and not show the main highlight of Track?

They didn’t broadcast it live? Well, by liberal logic - or what passes for logic to them - NBC must be racist. Why else would they fail to “celebrate” Mr. Bolt’s win? Bravo Mr. Bolt, sorry your win was tainted by such racist coverage.

“They pay a lot of money for the broadcast rights, and they want to draw eyeballs to the screen during the biggest advertising dollar windows.”

Good points and everyone here should listen up. They are a business (making a profit which is a good thing) and not an entitlement for viewers. People here of all places should understand that.
People complain way too much.

If I actually cared about the Olympics, I’d be livid.

But now I just kinda laugh.

Sure - they’re a business. But its customers are also free to seek other services if they aren’t satisfied with NBC’s delivery of the product. That’s the nature of a free market.

The Olympic coverage is no longer a sporting event, but rather a soap opera.

Not quite. MUI the online live coverage is being done by NBC as well.

We are getting a lot of our news from UK reporting of news that is omitted int the U.S. media.

It is telling both of us and them.

For us, it clearly demonstrates what our “news elite” consider important to report, ignore, or sweep under the rug.

However, I think there is more to learn. The British media is just as guilty or more of these omissions, so why the preoccupation with odd little stories from the U.S.?

I think it is a matter of bread and circuses. The strange happenings in the U.S. offer a distraction from the Orwellian society that is devouring the UK.

NBC has its live online coverage for cable subscribers, but that is by no means the only live coverage actually available online...
