CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A woman faced a judge in a Chula Vista courtroom Thursday two days after her pit bull allegedly mauled a 4-year-old girl.

Brittany Morgan Gardiner, 22, was arraigned on one count of having a dangerous dog that caused great bodily injury. It’s a felony charge with a maximum sentence of three years.

...

Deputy District Attorney Mary Loeb Gardiner might be a flight risk and asked for her bail to remain at $25,000.

“After this attack happened,” said Loeb. “This four year old girl is sitting there with her face torn up, bleeding everywhere and the defendant grabbed her dog, went to her apartment gathered her belongings and went to her car. When the cops got there she was trying to drive away. They stopped her from doing so, but when they did, she admitted that she was headed to Tijuana.”

I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.

I freaking hate those dogs and I automatically assume anyone owning one is a thug or at a minumum uneducated, low- life, trash.

One fact that many people don’t know is that homeowner insurance policies will drop coverage if the renters/owners have a, as classifed by the insurance industry, a dangerous breed (include, pit bulls, rottweilers, chows, and a few others.)

In fact, when insurance companies send out their surveyors to check the general condition of properties, dangerous dog breed is one of the things they look for.

I know. I was notified by my insurance company a number of years ago that my renters had 60 days to remove their Rottweiler from the property or coverage would be dropped - which we all know the mortagage holder doesn’t much like that you have no fire/insurance policy on THEIR property.

So, want to get rid of a dangerous breed in your neighborhood, find out that property’s insurance company and make a call that they will be party to the lawsuit filed if that dog ever does any damage.

I have a shelter dog that we adopted. I have absolutely no idea what sort of mix she is. People who should know tell me that she has some Pit Bull in her.

This is the sweetest, gentlest dog I have ever owned. I have a really hard time believing she is part-Pit.

““She’s a 22-year-old kid who is trying to get her life in order and has never been in trouble with the law,”

Is there a law requiring this kind of statement? And since when is a 22 year old woman a kid? Must be in the same vein that Miss S. Fluke is a “co-ed”.

I’ve known people who have pit bulls, and their dogs are sweet, gentle, and well trained. Other people have pit bulls that they seem to purposely train as monsters, to make up for their own lack of masculine anatomy. I fully support holding the owner responsible for the behavior of their pets.

The news link don't even show how the dog look like if it's Presa Canario or Rottweiler or Chihuahua.  I don't know if this Pitbull incident got the the nightly news...

Surprise! Join the club. In early 2006 I went looking for a Great Dane Laborador cross and acquired a fine, loving, funny puppy from a humane society. As Ulysses grew up, he turned out to be half Pit instead of Dane. Now, at a bit more than six and a half, he is the most loving, friendly, self confident dog in the world.

"And since when is a 22 year old woman a kid? "

Most states now have fathers pay CHILD support to a "kid" who is 21. And now it's being proposed to go to age 26 mandatory. Most of today's 21 year olds have the mental and emotional maturity of a 15 year old--due to dumbing down of education and parents being afraid to parent (CPS, honey boo boo method of non-parenting, et al)

You may want to do a little background on Merritt Clifton before you cite him. He's a PETA freak, and there have been a number of refutations of the methodology of his "study".

A lot of Animal Rights leftists see breed specific legislation as a foot in the door towards ultimately outlawing pet and animal ownership all together; Clifton falls into this group.

If you care to associate yourself with his *science*, you'll also conclude that animal husbandry is a cause of global warming, and vegeterianism is the way to go.

Feel free to lay down with him, but don't be surprised if you get up with fleas.

For Over 100 Years Americans Knew What Pit Bulls Were Famous For. BABYSITTING!

Astoundingly, for most of our history America’s nickname for Pit Bulls was “The Nanny Dog”. For generations if you had children and wanted to keep them safe you wanted a pit bull, the dog that was the most reliable of any breed with children or adults.

The Nanny Dog is now vilified by a media that always wants a demon dog breed to frighten people and LHASA-APSO BITES MAN just doesn’t sell papers. Before pit bulls it was Rottweilers, before Rottweilers it was Dobermans, and before them German Shepherds. Each breed in its order were deemed too vicious and unpredictable to be around people. Each time people wanted laws to ban them. It is breathtakingly ironic that the spotlight has turned on the breed once the symbol of our country and our national babysitter.

In temperance tests (the equivalent of how many times your kid can poke your dog in the eye before it bites him) of all breeds the most tolerant was the Golden Retriever. The second most tolerant was the pit bull.

*rest of the story and many more photos of pitbulls with kids at link*

"Rather then ask me if I am aware of who the guy is you jump to conclusions about me and what I beleive..."

LOL...go back and carefully read what I wrote, then tell me who's jumping to conclusions.

"You may want to do a little background on Merritt Clifton before you cite him. He's a PETA freak, and there have been a number of refutations of the methodology of his "study"."

No conclusion there...just a suggestion.

"A lot of Animal Rights leftists see breed specific legislation as a foot in the door towards ultimately outlawing pet and animal ownership all together; Clifton falls into this group."

No assumptions or conclusions there...just some info about the person you were citing.

If you care to associate yourself with his *science*, you'll also conclude that animal husbandry is a cause of global warming, and vegeterianism is the way to go."

Again, no conclusions or mindreading going on. Just an "if".

"Feel free to lay down with him, but don't be surprised if you get up with fleas."

No conclusion; just an admonition I would give to anybody citing Michael Mann on climate change, Dan Rather on journalism, Tim Geithner on tax advice, Bill Clinton on marital fidelity or Merrit Clifton on dog bite *studies.*
