3" 00 Buck - no problem, a bit warm but it works.

3" #4 Buck - more of above.

3" 1-1/4oz slugs - WHOA MOMMA, no shoulder left and The Problem (described below).

2-3/4" anything - no problems, works like a champ.

The Problem - On every single 3" slug I put through it the bolt and slide flew back, left the hull in the chamber, and I had to turn it over to pour the empty out and then cycle it again to get the next round. The elevator was down like ready for the next round but the ejector didn't eject, so the next round was still in the magazine.

This is a "military-grade shotgun" and I would expect it to eat just about anything, but to mess up on the worst recoiling of my ammo puzzles me. I sent Mossy an email and they want me to send it in. Has worked fine on all the other ammo since then so I don't want to send it back, but this really perplexes me. Why this problem on that particular round?

Weird.

Ideas, witty comments, insults all welcome as usual.

Cartridge separator. Mossberg will send you shipping/authorization number. You will need that. Ships to Rio Grande Valley. Turn around time 30-60 days, normally.

Is the barrel stamped for 3” shells? If yes I’d try another brand. If the problem continues take it to a competent gunsmith. You may have a defective extractor.

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso I once fell in love with a mexican squirrel.

Did you load the shells into the magazine and pump them into the chamber?

This may sound a little dumb, but are you sure those aren’t 3 1/2 inch slugs? Just a wild thought.

My first instinct would be to check the chamber. What you describe is what happens when you put 3” shells into a 2 3/4 chamber.

You can get away with it with shot or buckshot, but when you put in slugs, look out.

My model 88 with the pistol grip broke a bone in my hand with serious mag loads. I don't remember whether or not it ejected nicely, or whether I pumped another round in the chamber. I was blaspheming and turning the air blue at the time.

Big firearms, marginal results.

Personally, I'm ok with knowing that I'm gonna get hurt if I mash that bang switch, because the person on the other end will get hurt much worse, and it makes me mindful.

You need that serviced by a competent gunsmith, Mossberg or other. Your firearm should perform as flawlessly as possible and, in support of that, you need to know that you are doing everything right. A failure like this could lead to a greater failure when you can least afford it. Get it looked at.

I notice you aren't giving them away, or burning them, or turning them in at a 'buy back'.

You'll try it again, after the collar bone has healed up. ;)

If it hurts you that bad... it's gotta be worse on the far end.

Do you have a choke in the barrel ?

Only use a cylinder choke or a slug choke with a slug.

That poor skinny gal, her shoulder must be feeling it. She did well though, my hat’s off for her sand.

Cool though, that link let me find Hickok45 shooting my scatter gun, will watch later.
