Return of the King - Aragon's Speech
Return of the King | 1/31/2013 | JP II Be Not Afraid

The Return of the King

Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers!
I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.
A day may come when the courage of Men fails
When we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship
But it is not this day
An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the Age of Man comes crashing down
But it is not this day!
This day we fight!
By all that you hold dear on this good earth
I bid you stand, Men of the West!

Aragon's speech is inspirational and I thought we could use a little inspiration and hope. We have only begun to fight! So hold true and press forward.

Tolkien - Your quite the writer, thanks.

RushIsMyTeddyBear - I just love that scene. Gives me goose bumps every time I watch it.

J.R.R. Tolkien did not write that. Peter Jackson did. That monologue does not appear anywhere in the Lord of the Rings.

Took my little one to see the Hobbit this past weekend. Read the book years ago.

Got choked up at the scene at Bilbo’s dinner table where they said they no longer had a land. A place to call home. And they were determined to fight.

That’s how I feel right now. Because I certainly (as hell) don’t have anyone fighting for me up in Washington.

If you remember this (which made my blood boil):

I find Tolkien’s dialogue more motivating than Peter Jackson (He-who couldn’t stand the Scouring of the Shire, and therefore did not include it)

It’s been years since I had seen LOTR. Interestingly enough, I just a few minutes ago finished watching this movie.

And yes, it was an inspiring little speech.

Yes, I know. But it fits for today. We are standing looking at millions of orcs who want nothing but to destroy our great nation. We need leaders like Aragon to inspire this country from being scared do nothings to a people who will stand up and fight for the sacrifices that have been laid down for the past 200 years to keep our freedom we are on the verge of losing.

Where are those leaders? Who will stand up and inspire? Where is our Frodo, the one to end the evil? Will they come forward and change people's hearts?

Until the hearts of people are changed, nothing in this country will change.

We have seen the Hobbit twice. I also felt a connection to the dwarfs losing their land, the land they loved. But, we will never give up. We may lose heart from time to time, but the fight has just begun and I really don’t think they realize just what us little dwarfs can do. :)

I know. I agree with you. Just quibbling on the source of the quote.

But we don’t need Aragorn. We need Gandalf.

Isn’t it funny how things like that happen. Must have been meant to be. It is a great series. Good triumphing over the ultimate evil, it just never gets old.

We also need the Bilbo Bagginses of the world to stand by our side. Like he tells the Thorin Oakenshield; "Look, I know you doubt me, I know you always have. And you're right - I often think of Bag End, I miss my books, and my armchair, and my garden. See, that's where I belong, that's home. That's why I came back - 'cause you don't have one, a home. It was taken from you, but I will help you take it back if I can."

It takes a special kind of courage to overcome your fears and move past them to stand up for what you believe is right. As Paine said, "These are the times that try men's souls."

I agree wholeheartedly. We may not have Bilbo, but I bet we can count on Bibi.

Men of the West

No question Tolkien was thinking about the battle vs. Islam.

Love this speech as well. Love men like Aragon. Only in fairy tales :(
