Good afternoon/evening FReepers. Yep, it is Beer Thirty Time Once Again!

Happiness is a bubbling airlock! And a Cold Brew

Irish Stout Yum!

Good evening/afternoon brewers and winemakers.

I hope all of you and your Brews and Wines are doing well. Stop by and share what you are brewing or let us know what your favorite brew, wine or spirit is.

A little Beer News:

Samuel Adams beers captured nine medals at the International Brewing Awards 2013 in England.

The bi-annual competition attracted more than 1,000 entries from 45 countries. Forty judges, all professional brewers, assessed the beers over the course of three days. The medals winners in each category were announced at the National Brewery Center in Burton upon Trent, where the judging was held. The 11 overall championship winners will be unveiled April 24 in an awards luncheon at London Guildhall.

Beers are judged in several categories and sub-categories, so may be classified on how they are packaged, their color, their alcohol content, and by other means.

Thus Samuel Adams Cream Stout won silver in one category and gold in another. The other Samuel Adams gold medal beers were Cinder Block, White Lantern, Black & Brew Coffee Stout, and Latitude 48 IPA. Double Agent IPL and Third Voyage both won silvers, while Utopias 2012 took a bronze.

Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery won four medals, Sierra Nevada Brewing took three, BridgePort Brewing two, and Alaskan Brewing one for its highly decorated Alaskan Smoked Porter.

Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Inversion IPA and Obsidian Stout all won gold, and Red Chair NWPA took a bronze.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale won a gold and a bronze, while Narwhal Imperial Stout took a gold. BridgePort IPA and Ebenezer both won silver.

The complete list of the winners can be downloaded as a pdf.

Made a number if batches in the 70s. Dark and lager. If I could still drink I might consider making more.

I had the pleasure of having some of the Samuel Adams Third Voyage a couple of months ago. It is a Double IPA and was very good.

Doc. changed my Chemo medications, and gave me permission to drink a little bit. He is worried about over stressing my liver. I finally had a glass of the Hard Cider I made last September.

It was like sipping a little bit of Heaven.

I am hoping to try the Pale Ale I brewed with the new Belma hops this weekend. It has been on gas for a few days so it should be ready soon. I have a reddish/brown ale I made that should also be ready.

I brewed my once a year batch of Broweiser last weekend, a Bud clone-ish sort of thing. What a difficult to brew beer it is and it takes forever to make. That’s why I brew it once a year. It is fermenting away at 50 degrees and the krausen is starting to drop. I will be kegging it in a few weeks to do the lagering.

I think I am going to make an IPA next. I had a bottle of Lagunitas Maximus a couple of weeks ago and have had the itch to drink something super hoppy ever since.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Cheers,

knewshound

I was going to tell everyone that Mississippi finally legalized home brewing (Gov. Bryant will sign it, maybe already has), but you beat me to it, WKB. :-)

That means that me and my husband are now “legal.” HA!

It’s hard to believe that Mississippi was the only state in which home brewing was outlawed. Silly.

Actually there is still Alabama. It is funny that Ms allowes the making of wine but not beer. If signed into law July 1 homebrewing beer will be legal.

I will be bottling a Maibock tomorrow that I brewed with US-05 ale yeast. I know, not really Maibock if made with ale yeast.

On Sunday, I will be brewing up a Moose Drool clone.

I also have an Oktoberfest waiting for a temperature controller for a chest freezer so it can begin lagering.

And soon, I will be cracking open an APA I brewed with Galaxy hops.

The law passed refers to Homebrewing.

I'm currently enjoying a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. It's made by a microbrewery in Lexington who gets recently decanted bourbon barrels and stores their ale in them for six weeks. The aroma and flavor combinations are amazing!
