LA Agrees To Pay $40K To Women Mistakenly Shot At During Dorner Hunt

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The city has agreed to give $40,000 to two women whose pickup was shot up by LAPD protection detail that mistook their vehicle for the truck driven by rogue ex-cop Christopher Dorner during his rampage, officials announced Thursday.

The tax-free settlement covering the pickup and other property came quickly after the women’s attorney, Glen Jonas, rejected Chief Charlie Beck’s offer of a replacement truck because the women would have had to pay taxes. The deal specified no admission of liability.

I'm no fan of greedy plaintiffs, but $40,000 seems awfully light!

That is just to cover the truck and other property damages. More to come.

As I understand it, this compensation is only for the truck, and they have not waved the right to sue for personal injury etc..

“Jonas, who noted he has waived all his fees, said he hoped that all other issues, including personal injury, can be resolved without the need to file a lawsuit or have a trial.”

The attorney plans to be paid in a subsequent settlement that covers personal injury. He wavied his fee to keep the settlement under 50,000.

LA can settle cases for less than 50,000 with out a lot of red tape. This just a way to get them some tax free cash up front.

Lawyers don’t do cases like this for free.

The attorney wants a bigger cut.

They would have had to come up with his fee out of their pocket, if they had just accepted a new truck

And he ain't got time for that

I believe there should be a few zero’s tacked on to that for the stupidity and thuggishness of the cops just opening up on a civilian like that.

No admission of guilt. No admission that the LA cops are the laughingstock of the country.

Bingo. There are the laws for us, and the laws for our betters. You or me, we'd be likely already having our jury picked and probably facing attempted murder charges with hate crime enhancements, with an offer on the table to plead to attempted manslaughter with a ten year sentence.

I was just thinking about this case tonight.

I'm not sure I understand just WHY the officers opened fire on a truck that: Wasn't the color of the perp's truck, wasn't the same make/model, had 2 people in it, when pulled over why didn't the people in the truck simply obey officer's commands, and barring some kind of "furtive move" simply arrest the folks?

To make matters worse, they didn't (thankfully) KILL one of the two women in the truck, despite turning the cab into swiss cheese.

So we're left with stupid incompetent cops, or on the other hand, thank God the LAPD is full of stupid, incompetent cops.
