The average speed is 54.8mph ,, sounds like the people have spoken and they feel that 55 is a safe speed for this 4 lane highway (the photo shows that this borders a body of water so there is no traffic entering from side streets) .. the article mentions frequent accidents .. my first thought is that the few people driving 35 and the masses at 55 create the problem ,, simply raising the limit to 45 or 50 mph would greatly reduce the mismatch in speed between cars and reduce the accident rate.

“I suggest the next time they retire a police cruiser, they simply park it on Kelly Drive near Fountain Green Drive and place a mannequin in the driver seat sporting a full policeman’s uniform.”

That’s exactly what’s done in the town just north of mine. Everybody knows about it so everybody ignores it and speeds on by.

I like the way you think ... see reply #21 ... We are embarking on a massive widening program where I live that will be a PITA for many years ,, if they really want to increase road capacity by 15-20% I can do it in a week ,, just increase the posted speed limit from 50/55 to 70.. JOB DONE ... If the road was safe for the shit cars we had in the 1950’s and 1960’s at 65 it surely is fine for todays cars at 70.

I suggest the next time they retire a police cruiser, they simply park it on Kelly Drive near Fountain Green Drive and place a mannequin in the driver seat sporting a full policeman's uniform.

My hometown of Nampa, ID, did that a few years ago (actually, I think it was a wrecking yard that put the car out). They removed it after the dummy inside was found to have several bullet holes in it.

There’s an old joke about Kelly Drive during the AM rush hour, which is truly bumper to bumper at a HIGH rate of speed.

Goes like this: Dude was in his Volkswagen, looked down at his speedo, and it showed he was doing 55 mph.

It was then that he noticed his engine had stopped.

You have to drive that damn thing to understand how really close to reality that joke was.

Yeah...it only works for a while.

You know I have plenty of complaints about living on the left shore of America.

But one thing is aok.

I never get nailed for speeding. And I do it a lot.

Got a ticket driving in Chicago for one day. But it has been quite a while since I got stopped out here.

It seems the cops have plenty of other things to worry about.
