A research team from the University of Singapore has developed a device that can make objects invisible by bathing them in a beam of darkness.
The system takes the conventional approach to optics -- which generally aims to make images as sharp and clear as possible -- and turns it completely on its head. Usually imaging systems focus light into a pattern known as a point spreading function, which consists of a spiked central region of high intensity (the main lobe) surrounded by a concentric region of lower intensity light and a higher intensity lobe after this. In order to achieve the best resolution, the central region should be narrowed and intensified, while the outer lobe is supressed. This makes sure that the image is very bright and sharp with well-defined edges.
The researchers' beam can hide macroscopic objects by taking the opposite approach: intensifying the outer lobes suppressing the central region. This means that the central region has a field intensity of light that is pretty much zero.

Sounds something like “nulling”. Astronomers have been using the technique for a long time.
“A nuller is a tool used to block out a strong source so that fainter signals near the source can be observed. An example of a nuller is being employed on the Keck Interferometer. This causes the light from a star to destructively interfere, effectively cancelling out the star’s image. The faint light from an orbiting ring of dust can then be detected. This project is part of a scientific effort to detect and observe nearby planets.”

Standard problem solving : Reverse the objective. If you want to make customers happy, think about how to really piss them off. But projecting darkness? That is too cool for school.

Nulling actually involves two separated telescopes working together as one. Each one gathers the light from a star in such a way that the 2 wavefronts are 180 degrees out of phase when combined and so thereby cancel each other out, making it possible to see the faint light of the planet or whatever that might be there.
