Jahi McMath’s Health “Improving” After She Gets Feeding, Breathing Tubes

The lawyer for the family of Jahi McMath, the 13-year-old who has been declared brain dead, said Wednesday that doctors successfully inserted a gastric tube and tracheotomy tube into the teenager at an as yet undisclosed facility.

Jahi was transferred from Oakland Children’s Hospital January 5 after a protracted legal battle between the family and the hospital which declared Jahi brain dead December 12 and sought to remove her from a ventilator.

The arraignment to move Jahi was reached during a hearing Friday before Alameda Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo under which Jahi’s mother, Nailah Winkfield, could remove her daughter from the hospital as long as she assumed full responsibility.

Christopher Dolan told reporters that Jahi’s health is “improving,” and labeled the surgery “a success.”

“She is doing very well and getting the treatment she should have gotten 28 days ago,” Dolan said in a text message, according to the Oakland Tribune. “Doctors are optimistic that her condition has stabilized and that her health is improving from when she was taken from Children’s Hospital Oakland.”

Illustrating the daily ebb and flow, on Monday, Nolan was far less optimistic. “She’s in very bad shape,” he said, adding examinations show Jahi’s medical condition “is not good.”

The hospital reiterated its position that Jahi is brain dead. Deterioration “became inevitable the moment she died,” according to Dr. Heidi Flori, a critical care physician at Children’s Hospital.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Dr. Flori said in a court declaration filed in U.S. District Court that “The medical team and I believe that additional and more dramatic signs of the body’s deterioration will continue to manifest over time, regardless of any procedures and regardless of any heroic measures that any facility in the country might attempt.”

At the recommendation of doctors Jahi underwent an operation on December 9 to remove her tonsils, adenoids and extra sinus tissue to treat pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

Afterwards “The teen girl was alert and talking to doctors after the procedure, even asking for a Popsicle because her throat hurt,” CNN reported. “That was a relief in some ways because she’d expressed concerns to her family about the surgery, fearing she would never wake up from it, her uncle has said.”

“This is macabre. She’s dead.”

Jahi’s health is “improving,”

I would love to see a miracle happen. But I'm finding the above statement difficult to believe. I hope I'm wrong.

I don’t understand it either but if this child so much as opens her eyes or moves on her own someone at Children’s Hospital gonna have some explaining to do.

And in another case, a husband wants his brain-dead pregnant wife taken off life support, which will also kill the baby. It makes more sense to meep that woman alive.

Hey Children’s Hospital - how does your liability change if she’s NOT dead?

Oh, and here’s another question - ya’ll have any comment on Ariel Sharon’s status for the last 8 years?

Hmmm?

If she has machines keeping her heart and lungs operating that is one thing, but the notion that feeding tubes should be removed is simply murder.

If her heart and lungs are functioning on their own, she should be given food and water and cared for.

So onn Monday the Doctor who earlier said she was doing good says she is not doing well.
So is she doing good or not? They also have the Doctor’s name listed as Dolan then it is listed as Nolan who knows what the heck is going on.

IOW, she’s not dead and wasn’t given nutrients for a month. Visions of Terri, except Terri was wide awake and responsive and her HINO wanted her dead so she’d never be able to tell what really happened that night.

Sounds like the parents were right to ignore the hospitals doctors.

I’ve been told by a doctor the earlier surgery wasn’t advisable for someone with her weight and probable sleep apnea...Hospital needs to get ready to start writing big checks to the parents cause they’re gonna get sued for medical malpractice.

The problem is that declaring someone brain dead is actually a subjective call. And, when the possibility of harvesting a person's organs is in play it makes the decision suspect.

I haven't really followed this case much, but when the person in question can respond in any way, by blinking on command or attempting to smile, the person is not "brain dead."

Indeed. This is akin to trying to keep a decapitated body “alive.” Not even remotely similar to Terri.

I read elsewhere Jahi MacMath (not McMath) did NOT actually undergo so called "routine tonsillectomy."

Instead, they essentially had her entire upper airway reconstructed to alleviate sleep apnea?

This is California Sleep Institute website:

www.calsleep.com/conditions-sleep-disordered-breathing-california-sleep-doctors.html

Search for, "upper airway reconstruction"

So they don't really treat sleep apnea with tonsillectomy!

Are the cells in her brain dead or dormant?

Just curios, have you ever been in that position?

A lot of theory can get tossed out with a little bit of experience.
