For those watching their weight, choosing a restaurant salad over a fast food burger may not be the wisest idea.

A restaurant meal that includes an appetizer, salad entrée and one side can contain an average of 1,494 calories, compared to a greasy McDonald’s Big Mac Extra Value Meal that will set you back 1,130 calories, according to the Journal of Nutrition, Education and Behavior. […]

A Burger King Whopper with cheese, for example, has 710 calories. Comparatively, an Applebee’s Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad contains 800 calories and an Applebee’s Cheeseburger will set you back 940 calories.

Similarly, Chipotle’s Chicken Burrito Bowl can set you back on average 775 calories, but Chili’s Fresh Mex Chicken Bowl contains 960 calories. Meanwhile a Chili’s Trade Jalapeño Smokehouse Bacon Burger with Ranch comes in at a whopping 2, 210 calories. …

Why a Burger King Whopper contains LESS calories than a restaurant salad: Fattening upscale meals revealed
Uneven comparisons (and bad grammar; cf. “fewer calories”), but the salads do have more calories by themselves than the fast-food burgers alone.

From left to right, Original Chicken Sandwich, Big King (their version of the Big Mac) and the Premium Alaska Fish Sandwich.

Burger King cut back on the meat in the Whopper, from 1/3 pound uncooked meat to 1/4. They were infamous for slathering on the mayo. They may have cut back on that.

The Whopper used to be a decent burger for fast food. No more. McDonald’s has faded just as much. Wendy’s is better, but worse than it was before their “new burgers”.

Here in the upper Midwest, I would rank (for mainstream fast food burgers, not counting specialty joints like Five Guys):

Steak’n’Shake
Hardee’s
Culvers
A&W
———————BIG GAP-——————
Wendy’s
Burger King
McD’s

It was the intermingling of mayo and juicy tomato that made Whoppers such a wonderful thing back in the day. I haven’t had a really good Whopper in a long time.

I have had exactly one fast food burger in the last roughly 15 years. It was a McDonald’s double cheeseburger and was about as bad as it gets.

I would generally rate Burger King as the worst back when I ate at those places tho oddly the best hamburger I ever had was at a Burger King in the outskirts of Mobile, Alabama near the airport.

I’;; stay with the White Castles. No one knows how many calories are in them because no one knows what they contain.

Kangaroo and goat meat I’ve heard since they jump around in my stomach and are really “baaaaddd”!

Pretty stupid comparisons. Most people order a burger and fries and a drink. Also, when I order a salad as a main dish, I seldom eat the whole thing. I think it has to do with all of the chewing involved. So I leave half of it or hubby eats half of it.

And maybe I’m crazy but I would swear that all the fast food places have quit salting their fries enough.

Somehow, some way, Burger King has managed to purchase only the bottom of tomatoes for use in their current edition of the Whopper.

They are all cutting back on ingredients. That is part of “shrink”flation. We pay the same prices, or rather gradually increasing prices for smaller portions. I am a habitué of Waffle House and have been watching that process. It is getting a little faster. I have heard or seen from several sources now that actual price inflation is running at 9% which is extreme for a first world economy. And, in an inflation wages are the last prices to rise so we are getting all that on our heads.

This is simply wrong.

It's "fewer" calories, not "less."

I think their calorie test is just the burn off of the fumes. MMM...MMMM GOOD! (and fun to make fun of)

I haven't had the pleasure. I haven't seen a Smitty's, and I've only been to Maid-Rite once. It might be worth another try, this time for the tenderloin.

How is it possible to go to Steak n Shake and NOT get the chili 5 ways?

I remember the hamburgers were good, but once I tasted chili 5 ways I couldn’t get any other words out of my mouth except maybe and a large chocolate malt.
