Into the Belly of the Beast and Out Again
HTRN | 2/15/2014 | HTRN

Maybe sometime I will fill out some more details, but this is a beginning of a thread describing how I hired on as a programmer to a state Medicaid program, and what I saw.

My outspoken Christian faith, I believe, is what ultimately got me kicked out of the system. That's not how it was put. They complained I hadn't done what the boss wanted (maybe I had misunderstood him, but I honestly thought I had obeyed whatever he actually stated he wanted). But I think that was an excuse, as an experienced co-worker had congratulated me for doing something the boss had later complained about.

But I don't feel like in good conscience I could have kept on. I could have snoozed at my computer and they wouldn't have cared... they were taking their sweet time in getting me authorized into the systems I was supposed to help program and administer. Like over eight weeks sweet time, and my contract firm said oh that wasn't unusual, it usually takes three weeks (hey, there is only 166% difference there, but what's that among friends).

Also the mission had me badly conflicted. While rationalizing that a state charity is better than no charity, and that therefore there was some kind of blessing on the system, I still wondered where traditional church charities were. There are medical missions to Haiti... how about to the inner city USA? I even proposed to an official suggestion box that the framework be expanded to allow private payers, though in hindsight that would be pretty naive since the "missions" model would be absent.

Sometime maybe I will say more. But anyhow I feel like I'm getting my sanity back. Unfortunately I also need a job again. While I have a wild hope that someday my gospel song writing venture with a partner currently out of state will pan out, because we're producing some pretty emphatically evangelical stuff that we think outshines most of the radio fare, that normally takes a while to get under way. And even Christians have to eat....

Father ... you hear her prayer and know already the answer.
We unite in prayer and agree with You that Your will be done, but Father ... we're so lame sometimes and scared at others, and HTRH needs direction.
We call on you to give her another job, or open her composing doors ... just relieve the anxiety

Thank you knarf.

To be sure, I had misgivings. I think the Holy Spirit sorted out whether I should have stayed there (the answer was no).

Now some other folks I know who are good Christians as far as I can tell are there... but man, it seems to me that it would be an exercise in keeping your lamp carefully shaded. I had asked a co-worker, a gal who had a cute little trailer model in her cube with “Jesus Saves” flags flying over it, to pray for a pet who had gotten accidentally injured, and got sternly rebuked on the basis that there was “no place for religion in the workplace.” Ahem? Now maybe she was displeased with ME, but still. That’s one of the lamer excuses. Why would I as a believer ever say that? God doesn’t honor any secular doors that say “stay out” and the official policy didn’t even go THAT far.

And another Christian buddy talked almost alarmingly flippantly about how “his boss thinks he controls his time.” Ahem again?

It just looked like Compromise City to me. Maybe I could have approached it better and raised the consciousness level of fellow Christians, but still. There are problems in Houston, so to speak.

We here in FR have our own brand of arrogance ... there's nothing we can do about it ... it's the result of going to the well of Living Water so many times and sitting at the feet of Truth.

We DO have a way of one word zingers without realizing there are people with very thin skins and in so many ways .. plastic.

I've contemplated many times what a conversation would be like between me and Adams (f'rinstance)... (kind'a like doing the dozens with William F Buckley), because the difference in conversational understanding of English would be diverse enough for him to lose patience with me while I scratch my head and say, "Huh?"

We in modern America who desire the life envisioned by the founders, struggle with translating what we believe to be true into language and life others would also desire ... but they either scratch THEIR head and say, "Huh?" or just get pissed because (whether they know it or not .. and some really don't know what they're doing), they want nothing to do with the America (and her way of thought) WE want.

If it's any consolation, before I retired three years ago, I was fired from two jobs that were bogusly (huh?) fomented

I'm one of those guys the dawgs deride because I married a Filipina and have an "in" to a tropical paradise I'm endeavoring to reside ... until I die.

There's no more an interest or fun in working in the US.

I’m with you. My income has been slashed due to the current regime’s economic policies but I am working diligently to change that and starting to see some fruit. I guess I got a little too comfortable in my life and my Father in Heaven reminded me not to take things for granted. He also reminded me to store up things for these years beforehand. Had I not listened to Him I would have been destitute now and I’m living day to day on His sustenance and He has provided. Sometimes it gets a little scary but I trust Him and have faith that I will scrape by and that’s exactly what I’ve done so far. I know He will do the same for you. I pray that He blesses you with work soon...: )

I run my own business but I often amuse myself considering the many places I’d get myself kicked out of in hours days or weeks just by being myself. I don’t do PC.

Take your music, get together with other PEOPLE and play it in front of still other PEOPLE (make a joyous noise). I’m working on recording a Christian song myself, never written one before. I presented it to a young singer/writer from GA of Christian music and she laughed and called it “mystical”. Guess you shouldn’t trust some jobs to North Eastern American Irish Catholics.

Keep on keeping on and trust in Jesus, something will come up.

I can all but guarantee, based on some little personal experience of both state and federal government, that "the problem" was not you nor, more especially, your faith in Christ.

The problem was the darkness in their hearts, the state religion that professes non-religion.

State bureaucracies are some of the darkest corners of Leviathan, simply because they function with almost no oversight whatsoever, for a variety of reasons.

Ashley Crockett, Davy's grandson, had a formula for avoiding controversy. "Do nothing, say nothing, be nothing."

I’ll add my prayers for you HTRN to find a job/new source of income....and that the path you choose will glorify Our Lord in heaven above. I pray the Holy Spirit will guide you and that that Our Heavenly Father will comfort you and give you wisdom and strength. May God bless you and light your path.

Well, seems to me that “mystical” is exactly what full on Christianity will look like. So if you are getting mystical you are likely going down the right road as long as the theology is sound.

It won’t be possible to mistake it for the world’s modes of celebration, which are anchored to the earth. Christ is a supernatural being, actually supernatural God, folks. What else could reach out to sinners and pardon them and cheer them and fill them with love?

Messages and phenomena in accordance with this are going to weird the world out seriously. What, do I think God will actually move mountains around for me? Well, YES!

Granted it happens in coordination with normal human events most of the time. But there’s a providential aspect that can’t be denied no matter how hard you try.

If you love God, God will love you back and get ready for it to look very weird to the world.

I’m one of those guys the dawgs deride because I married a Filipina and have an “in” to a tropical paradise I’m endeavoring to reside ... until I die.

Remind me please, where did any of us ‘deride’ you for those choices? I ask sincerely as I don’t recall that occurring.

It has been my experience with reading your posts, there isn’t a whole lot of nah nah nah nah nonsense going on.

I doubt anyone gives any thought to who you married, that is a rather weak attempt to paint with a broad brush.

"I'm one of those guys the dawgs deride because I married a Filipina and have an "in" to a tropical paradise I'm endeavoring to reside ... until I die."

Whoa now...I can't speak for my fellow dags, but last we talked, not only did I not deride you, I wished you luck with your move to the Philippines! To be precise, I said (7 Feb, thread - "Time to debunk the myth of the tax-free expat"):

"If you're planning to go expat, or already have, that's your business. I certainly wouldn't try to stop you, even if I knew you. Just pay your expat taxes (IOW, pull your share of the load) and don't insult the USA from your beach chair thousands of miles away, and we'll have no problem. I'll even wish you luck."

So what about that was "deriding" you? I don't disparage anyone for moving wherever they want to go, or marrying whomever they want to marry. What pi**es me off, and the rest of the dawgs well, about Alex, is that he bashes the nation that gave him everything he has, to include his precious Social Security, without which he apparently couldn't live. What pi**es us off is that he derides the USA, he derides we patriots who would no sooner leave our Republic than we would cut off our right arms, and he Monday morning quarterbacks our problems from the "safety" of his beach chair thousands of miles away. Personally speaking, he pi**es me off because he lied about me behind my back, and doesn't have the guts to come face me about it.

Which reminds me...where's the quote, Alex, you piece of lying crap? Still afraid to come out and face me like a man? Maybe it's because you're not a man, but a sniveling little maggot who has to hide behind his wife/human washing machine. Lying sack of swill...

But I digress. Now, I would expect the cowardly liar Alex to stretch the truth, misrepresent the truth, or however else you want to say "lie". Don't join him in that pit. I respect you, because you've not given me any reason not to. Please don't give me one.

Thanks for the heads up, AmGal.

I really don't recall any of us saying much of anything to you. Certainly nothing derogatory.

Got a reference?

Starting to lie like your buddy?

It's said you can tell a lot about a man by who his friends are.

We really don't care who you marry, and we don't care where you live.

Knarf, as a proud member of the Manger Dawg pack, I echo wku man's sentiments. I wish you well in your new home in the Phillipines, and hope that it turns out to be everything you wish for.

I hope you'll remain as steadfast a patriot as I've known you to be, and not slip into being the sort of beach chair critic who turns their nose up at stateside patriots, like a certain expat who's pinged to this post.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your adventure.

Windy

Who the hell derided you? You don’t think any of us dogs isn’t living his own dream, in his own dream home and location here in the greatest country on earth? (I did the islands/beach living thing years ago. Never again). Now we dogs think America is the paradise....even with it’s problems and are not leaving. To many past brave members of our armed forces gave their lives for us to be able to live in America. We are here to stay and to try and help right the ship. This entire idea anyone might have that the dogs are jealous of anybody else who lives in some third world defenseless piss-pot is just acting the fool.

I'm without words and defense.

I thought I remembered you telling me something like
"good luck, good riddance and don't let the door hit you on your way out"
which, of course is nothing compared ...

And I went looking ... and I can't find that statement and I'm scratching my head trying to figure out where I got that idea.

I hope someday to feel free and comfortable, not giving my opus, but describing my last three years.
