Teen In Medical Dispute Sent To Foster Care
CBS ^ | Ken MacLeod

BOSTON (CBS) – A Connecticut couple sobbed outside a Boston courtroom after a legal setback in their yearlong battle to regain custody of their daughter.

The state of Massachusetts took charge of Justina Pelletier as her parents and doctors at Children’s Hospital continue to clash over her diagnosis and treatment. The teen’s mom broke down in court. Paramedics wheeled Linda Pelletier from the courthouse Monday afternoon minutes after she collapsed upon hearing a judge order her embattled teenaged daughter into foster care.

“This child has been ripped away from this family,” Rev. Patrick Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition said.

A year ago, Justina Pelletier was still ice skating as she underwent treatment for mitochondrial disease — a rare and controversial disorder where the body’s cells can’t produce energy, triggering chronic fatigue and severe digestive problems.

Gordon Russell’s wife died from it. “This girl is in trouble,” he says. “And we are all standing around watching her deteriorate.”

Trouble began when the Pelletiers brought Justina into the Children’s Hospital ER last February where they say doctors quickly cast aside her diagnosis, instead concluding her problems were of psychiatric origin.

When the Pelletiers objected, Children’s brought in DCF and the state took custody of Justina, essentially ruling her parents were committing child abuse by pursuing medical rather than mental health treatment.

“They see their daughter suffering and in pain and they are not able to do something about it so that has obviously taken a toll on the family,” says Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel.

Now that she is a ward of the state they can experiment on her.

The state-child-protective complex is a very dangerous organization. Seldom does it do a thing worth doing.

Very dangerous. Their goal is “the best interest of the child” and they believe a reunification with a parent who is drug addicted, abusive, and even a murderer should be their goal. Yet, they are doing all they can to keep this child from her seemingly innocent parents. Something is seriously wrong with this case. I would be very interested to know the politics of the parents.

The gastric doctors who had been treating her at Tufts University transferred to Boston Children’s. When the Pelletiers took her to BCH to see her old doctors, a doctor in the neurology department took over and wouldn’t even allow her old gastric doctors see her. I believe that someone at BCH screwed up in a big way and they are going all out to keep from admitting their mistake and if there is “collateral damage”, well everyone will just be ordered by the court to keep quiet to preserve the hospital’s reputation.

Furthermore, get used to phychosis being the fallback position for doctors who don’t know or can’t fiture out what is really going on...

I know this is nit-picking, but the article says something about her going to the Boston hospital “last February”, and I was thinking it was just recently. ?

This has long been a problem. I have suffered chronic problems for years now, and know of many people in my boat who have been accused of just being crazy. They are given Prozac. It’s probably just the doctors who don’t have enough specialized training to believe these people really have a physical problem. And I think some are arrogant enough to just get sick of complaining people and just write them off as hyperreactive complainers.

Children have been dying by the dozens in DCF custody and Governor Mini Me took off for Costa Rica right after declining to accept the resignation of the incompetent boob responsible. This girl isn’t even a resident of MA. They are from CT.

She was taken from her family over a year ago.
The family has been fighting ever since to get her back and let her old doctors treat her.

On top of everything else, gastric problems, from which my daughter and my brother-in-law suffer, require strict diet regimens. Without dietary control the girl could be in severe distress.

So she has been in foster care for over a year now? Why is the story just breaking so much later?

They’ve had gag orders on the parents. Possibly because of the age of the kid. The father finally violated the gag order in order to get the story out.
