Bald eagle fends off raccoon from nest

PITTSBURGH —A female bald eagle defended her nest and the three eggs inside it from an intruding raccoon late Wednesday night.

PixController, which is providing a live-stream camera of the nest, captured the close call near the Monongahela River in Hays. (Mobile users: Click here to watch the video)

The video showed the eagle being startled by the raccoon before she sprung up and spread her wings. After only a few seconds, the raccoon fled the nest and the mother settled back down.

It's not believed any of the three eggs inside were harmed.

The 5 1/2-year-old female laid the first egg a week ago. All of the eggs are expected to hatch in late March.

The nest is about 100 yards away from an earlier nest that collapsed after the two eagles arrived in the area last spring and raised a chick.

Reminds me of Psalm 91:

4 He will spread his wings over you and keep you secure. His faithfulness is like a shield or a city wall. 5 You won’t need to worry about dangers at night or arrows during the day. 6 And you won’t fear diseases that strike in the dark or sudden disaster at noon.

Used to live just up the road from where this eagle is nesting.

Hope my former neighbors keep a close eye on their Yorkshire Terrier.

I hate them too. Learned to hate them after moving onto the farm with chickens, turkeys, bantam etc. Even found the head of a rabbit behind the garage and the body over by our pond....thats how they kill, bites the head off...vicious, rabid carrying vermin.

When I was in Alaska, eagles nests can weigh as much as 1/2 ton...used the same one’s year after year and just repair them. They were huge.

Pretty ballsy raccoon, an eagle is big enough to decide to make the raccoon lunch.

Heartening. I have a raccoon living in my chicken coop attic. Two chickens down so far. His ‘use by’ date is tomorrow. Pretty sure he’s not going to be able to ‘fend off’ my .22. *SMIRK*
