One of Britain’s greatest military commanders, Viscount Slim, has been accused of molesting children at a school for underprivileged youths while serving as the Queen’s representative in Australia.

Bob Stevens, a claimant in a lawsuit against Fairbridge Farm, a school in Australia for mostly British child migrants, said Viscount Slim would arrive in his Rolls Royce and the “next minute we were sitting on his knee and he's got his hands up our trousers”.

... He was labelled “the finest general World War II produced” by Lord Mountbatten.

I saw an interview with a German Field Marshall who was in prison in England at the time. He was asked who the best allied general was and he replied, “Montgomery and Patton were the best”.

Montgomery has been accused of much the same thing.

I also read where Eisenhower commented that General Simpson, never made a mistake during the entire war as far as he knew.

Sad to hear if true. Bill Slim was one of the UK’s greatest commanders, ever.

Then the Germans were just as susceptible to the relentless self-promotion of those two as everyone else. The more I read about both of them, the less impressed I am.

Monty equals McClellan. Patton had great flaws but a good gene.

"Montgomery and Patton were the best".
Montgomery and Patton was the best. *fixed*..rem: "A Bridge Too Far".
his ignoring of the 2 Panzer Tank divisions within
miles of the drop zone doomed the operation.

"If true" is the operative phrase. I have problems believing people who come forward decades later complaining about things like this.

Maybe because he actually faced those two. Bill Slim fought against the Japanese in World War II. Slim was a genuine military genuius, Montgomery I would rate as ‘competent’. He wasn’t a complete fool, but his arrogance sometimes led him to make foolish mistakes.

Orde Wingate was also a military genius, if somewhat lower down the pecking order and slightly prone to madness and eccentricity.

Maybe, but he built his reputation on "brilliance" that came from broken German codes in North Africa.

His constant hesitation and slowness caused constant problems.

My dad was in WWII and I remember him saying that he couldn’t stand Patton, which shocked me. Part of the reason is that Patton’s troops always got the best while leaving everyone else had to fend for themselves.

Spot on. Patton may not have been a genius, but at his core he was a doer and got shit done. Every day you gave most German commanders to scrounge and dig in was a hazard in the long run and I think Patton did readily see that and that situation was ideal for an offensive general on the allies side.

I just can't figure out the great battle or campaign Patton's genius won. North Africa? He really played a small part and operationally there was no brilliant stroke, just a grind. That "Hold 'em by the nose and kick 'em in the ass" battle in the movie never happened. Sicily? Yeah, he ran wild...against Italians who couldn't surrender fast enough. When he hit the Germans, it was another grind until the Germans evacuated the island. France? Once the bombers blew a hole in the German lines in Normandy and Cobra stepped off, they were an army in full retreat and the Americans struggling to keep up with them until they hit the Siegfried Line. Patton's one great accomplishment was turning his army to hit the German flank at the Bulge. Other than that, I just don't see what he did that just about any other US general on those fronts did.

And don't get me started on Monty.

Not sure if 80% of Germany’s manpower was at the Eastern Front, read one place that said so. Kind of a depressing figure that the Commie sympathizers throw around. Of course, Stalin himself, they executed some of their own Generals in the USSR I understand and the Soviet side did not fight competently I hear. I don’t know myself.
