Boston researchers have successfully regrown human corneal tissue—a feat that could potentially restore vision in the blind.

The achievement also marks one of the first times that scientists have constructed tissue using adult-derived human stem cells.

In a new study published in the journal Nature, researchers from Massachusetts Eye and Ear Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the VA Boston Healthcare System detailed their groundbreaking research. According to the paper, the key to the study’s success revolves around a molecule known as ABCB5, which serves as a biomarker for previously elusive limbal stem cells.

Residing in the eye’s limbus—the border of the cornea and the whites of the eye—the limbal stem cells are responsible for maintaining and recreating corneal tissue. Because of their regenerative ability, scientists have long hoped to harness these stem cells for regrowing human tissue in those with blindness due to corneal injury or disease. …

And the hits keep coming.

Research on adult stem-cells has brought about many real therapies, saving or improving many real peoples’ lives, with more on the way.

Research on embryonic stem-cells is just an excuse for abortions.

Although the science is impressive, I expect the cost would be astronimical. I read an article about the most successful cancer therapies which mentioned how most are out of the financial reach of most cancer victims.

Costs under the current government micromanaging scheme certainly will be astronomical.

Yep. There was a constant drum beat about embryonic stem-cells in the state controlled media not so long ago, and now I never see them mentioned.

Eye stem cell surgery is being successfully performed by Dr. Holland of the Cincinnatti Eye Inst. (?correct name of clinic). He also has a clinic over the Ky line--Edgemont or something. A friend has been looking into it for her son.

Don't know if it is same kind of research or not, but sounds like it.
