Fremont school district delays adopting controversial sex-ed book - publisher to change it

The Fremont Unified school board held off on adopting "Your Health Today" after parents complained that its presentation of frank sexual topics was unfit for teaching ninth-grade students.

The majority of the nearly 60 speakers said they opposed using "Your Health Today" and objected to chapters that discuss prostitution, bondage, pornography and other frank sexual education topics. About two-thirds of the audience waved yellow signs that read, "Remove College Textbook."

Others who favor adopting the new textbook waved green signs that read, "I support comprehensive sex education."

The controversy started June 25, when Fremont school board members voted 3-2 to buy copies of the book for $204,600.

The 392-page text was chosen from among several books after a review process that included input from teachers and parents, district leaders said.

But opposition built in recent weeks as news of the book's contents spread among district parents.

As of Wednesday evening, a petition on the website Care2 had around 2,500 signatures calling for the book's removal.

District leaders say they recommended holding off on using the new textbook after receiving feedback from parents, health teachers and others in the community.

Superintendent James Morris said last week that Fremont health instructors' primary goal is to teach the state standards in an age-appropriate, accurate, objective and sensitive manner.

"It will remain our goal when working with the publishers to make revisions to the text," he said.

“comprehensive”

There’s that word again. When you see it, head for the hills.

Come to the teachers’ lounge after class for some discipline.

Yet the “church” is the big scandal as if there is some sort of criminal conspiracy afoot.

Public schools are evil.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Giving hormone laden teens that kind of sexually explicit material is throwing gasoline on a fire.

They’re causing in teens the very behavior they claim they are trying to prevent.

If I did that for the 9th grader next door, I’d be arrested and jailed for corrupting the morals of a minor and branded a sex offender.

“hormone laden teens”

That term always threw me. Maybe boys are but most girls who are sexually active as teens do so because they are starved for affection not because they are hormone laden. Boys know this and prey on it in order to get sex from girls.

Well, with the way girl’s bodies are also changing, yes, they are hormone laden as well and they do have a sex drive.

However, I agree with you and believe that you are correct about the reason girls are sexually active.
