Penn State bowl ban lifted immediately, full scholarships for 2015-2016

The Penn State Nittany Lions are eligible to play in a bowl game this season after the NCAA ruled they are satisfied with the athletic department’s progress in ensuring it functions with integrity.

“Penn State’s commitment to the integrity of its athletics department and its progress toward meeting the requirements of the Consent Decree are clear,” said Northern Arizona President Rita Hartung Cheng via NCAA.org, who chaired Monday’s Executive Committee meeting. “We thank Senator Mitchell for his meticulous and exhaustive work over the past two years. Mitchell’s efforts and the dedication of Penn State officials made today’s decisions possible.”

Penn State was given scholarship reductions and banned from postseason play after the Joe Sandusky sex abuse scandal that rocked Happy Valley and college athletics that resulted in Joe Paterno being removed as the head coach and swift and severe penalties being handed down.

The university had to pay a $60 million fine, was banned from postseason play for four years and vacated its 112 wins from 1998-2011. The Nittany Lions also had to lose 10 initial scholarships for four years beginning in 2013-14 and will drop its total number of scholarships from 85 to 65 for four years beginning in 2014-15 and was placed on probation for five years.

A reduction in the penalties was announced in 2013 that allowed the Nittany Lions to have 75 scholarships in 2014, 80 in 2015 and the full allotment of 85 in 2016.

This is a significant victory for the university, first-year head coach James Franklin and the football team that will no longer be punished for the crimes and misdoings of others.

Penn State is off to a 2-0 start and has one of the best quarterbacks in college in Christian Hackenberg and is almost assured of reaching the six wins to be eligible for a bowl game.

The ncaa loves to play chess until they see they're beaten. Then they flip the board and claim moral superiority.

Screw off ncaa and give Penn State and Joe Paterno back their wins (the NEXT lawsuit will take care of that).

You want Penn State to sue the NCAA to bring Joe Pa back to life?

This was a terrible misplaced punishment. The players had no complicity nor the fans. Joe Pa and the administrators with knowledge needed prison in my opinion but if a coach commits murder— we punish the TEAM? You are kidding me? Good Luck Lions . Welcome back. The NCAA is a total joke. They need to be enjoined and removed.

...so who beat them...?

Screw off ncaa and give Penn State and Joe Paterno back their wins (the NEXT lawsuit will take care of that).

...the Paternos will fare little better than Corbett did...though quite possibly the wins vacated from 1999 to 2001 may be revisited...

The big conferences have the NCAA exactly where they want them.

Jake Corman had the ncaa and the University administration (the other enemy here) about to be hauled into discovery.

No one wanted that. Ever.

Thus this Kabuki Theater we see now.

...neither do the players nor the fans of any single team that has ever been hit with NCAA sanctions...what makes PSU any different...?

The atrocities there were allowed to happen because Paterno was Il Duce. He was the law, his whims were law. And he ignored what was happening. Everybody at PSU was his underling, the university President and the athletic director included. The entire culture worshipped Paterno and PSU football. It was corrupt and lawless through and through.

And now?

And now Football still reigns supreme. The university has hired a new coach, football is still worshipped. Nothing fundamental has changed.

I never understood how the NCAA could take taxpayer money (the $60 million fine) and spend how ever they wanted. As part of their surrender the NCAA has given up on demanding control over the $, one step ahead of being forced to.

...made up narratives are funny things...there’s one out there, floating around in central Pa., saying Jerry never did molest any boys against their will, he was just horsing around and teaching them how to wash themselves in the shower...all just a big misunderstanding...

...not that any thinking person would ever believe such a narrative...

Corman is the state legislator that sued the ncaa to keep the $60M fine in the state of PA. The ncaa fought this tooth and nail until a judge basically agreed with Corman.

Once the suit was given standing, the scope was enhanced to include the “consent decree” - it’s origin and it’s legalities.

The ncaa (yesterday) admitted that they had given up that fight, and PA could keep the money in state. Corman countered with “not so fast” - what about this consent decree?

This is a settlement of sorts. Mitchell is irrelevant (the Maytag repairman is busier than someone looking for problems within the PSU athletic department). He was just another part of the theater.

As to the administration? They WROTE the consent decree. They VOLUNTEERED for these sanctions. For proof of that to come out, alumni would be even more disgusted with their post 10-9-11 actions than they already are.

Let’s put it this way. If Corman’s suit would have gone forward, Emmert, Freeh, Erickson, Surma, Peetz, Frazier, and countless others would have finally been under oath.

None of them wanted anything to do with that. Corman settled for sanction relief.

Sue’s lawsuit will take care of the wins.

“Who the hell is Joe Sandusky?”

The pedophile that brought down JoePa, the PSU AD and President when they tried to placate him by hiding his dirty deeds and letting him continue molesting boys.

He was also big at Second Mile, an organization to help at-risk boys. This was his favorite hunting ground.

What we still don’t know is how many others were part of his hunting party ....
