Perhaps explaining why those Hobbit movies cost so much damn money to make, Entertainment Weekly has revealed that The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies will end with a 45-minute battle scene. Director Peter Jackson spoke with EW about the logistics of creating such an epic climax. “We have dwarves and men and elves and orcs, all with different cultures, with different weapons, and different shields and patterns and tactics,” Jackson explains, before sharing the highly scientific way he maps out his fight scenes:

The Spitfire was a beautiful airplane, but I hope they give the Hurricane its due. It was a rock solid gun platform.

Peter Jackson, in his stinker version of King Kong, had a 45 minute falling off a cliff scene. Stupidest thing I ever saw in a movie.

Well, maybe it wasn’t 45 minutes, but it sure seemed like it.

When do they film the Wheel of Time movie?

I think I’d rather read the book again.

Sorry, I was filmagining how great it would be to just splice out of the last 45 minutes of this latest Hobbit film and insert the fight scenes from "The Battle of Britain" instead.

I'm a huge Tolkien fan. I found the LOTR movies to be not too bad -- although many parts made me cringe (Jackson thinks he's a better story-teller than Tolkien). But the Hobbit movies have been really painful. I didn't like the first one, and I hated the second one.

I kind of wish George Lucas were in charge of it instead of Jackson (that's the worst insult I can come up with).

45 minute battle scene at the end?

It’s almost like they filmed many folk’s Thanksgiving dinner.

TOO DAMN LONG! I am a huge Hobbit fan. I loved The Lord of the Rings. It was necessary that it take three movies to make. That being said: The Hobbit is a children's story the entire story should have been no longer than 2.5 hrs and that is a stretch. Besides money, WHY would you corrupt a perfectly good story by making it at least three times longer than it deserves?

The first LOTR was good. The second with the long battle scenes lost me so much I didn't bother to ever watch the third.

Forty-five minute battle scene? Why? It adds nothing to the STORY.

I know what you're saying. I remember in the "Mines of Moria" section, Jackson inserted this ridiculously gratuitous scene with huge chunks of rock falling and destroying the stone stairway (as if Orcs, Trolls, and a Balrog weren't dramatic enough).

Aragorn and Frodo get caught on one of the teetering sections, and Aragorn sez "Lean forward!"

Absolutely ridiculous, and a good example of sometimes just having too big of a special effects budget. I mean, why not include the scene where Gandalf puts a hold spell on the door, which is answered by a potent counterspell (from the Balrog?)

Point being, such silly additions, while deleting other excellent vignettes, was just wrong.

Having said that, I thought that Jackson did great on the original trilogy, despite the shortcomings...
