Isn't that what heavy doses of morphine do? I mean I have had two terrible accidents involving crushed limbs, blood loss, trauma, internal organ damage, and shock. In both cases morphine and Demerol given through an IV push put me into what you would call hibernation all right.The only exception was one time an accident included brain injury and seizures which I was unaware I was having, precluded any meds other than those to reduce brain swelling and seizures (Dilantin). The pain levels were rather uncomfortable in that one.

Remember that gas the Russians pumped into the movie theater where hostages were being held by Chechnya's rebels? The Russians saved most of the hostages but a few died from the gas. It is very hard to control dosage in a somewhat ambient atmosphere. Body weights, age, physical condition vary along with atmospheric conditions. Dispersal is never uniform.

I always thought airlines should look into the same thing too. Flood the cabin with some sort of aerosolized propophyl drug on departure, and then flush with oxygen fifteen minutes before landing. Keep the pilots on a separate air system.
