Jack FM turkey 'cook or save' vote slammed by Brian May [Queen guitarist]
BBC ^ | December 11, 2014 | unattributed

A radio station that asked listeners to vote on whether two turkeys should be killed has been criticised by animal lovers - including Queen guitarist Dr Brian May.

And the RSPCA has urged Jack FM to rethink the online vote on whether the turkeys should be cooked or kept alive.

The RSPCA said it opposed any practice with the "potential to cause animals pain... in the name of entertainment".

Currently, 62% of people have voted to save the turkeys, named Sage and Onion.

The Oxfordshire station said if listeners voted to kill the pair in the "cook it or keep it" poll the farm would "facilitate the procedure".

Guitarist May, who also opposed the badger cull, asked on Twitter: "Anybody else disgusted by this?"

The campaign has also received mixed comments from the public on social media.

Posting on BBC Oxford's Facebook page Tasha Baker said: "You can bet 90% of those who complained will have a turkey on their table at Xmas."

Wendy Grimsdale posted: "We all know animals are slaughtered for food but that doesn't mean we should celebrate the killing as entertainment."

Jack FM's News Director, Caroline Verdon, said: "If it's decided that the turkeys are to be saved then we will be working with the relevant welfare authorities to make sure that Sage and Onion's forever home will be somewhere that they can have a long and happy life together.

"If listeners vote to cook the turkeys, the turkey farm would facilitate the procedure."

Oh, I agree with you.

He used to insist on doing multiple tracks for the Queen recordings, and insisted on the jacket having the text “No synthesizers!” Yeah, a lot better to have no way to reproduce the performance live, apart from the use of tapes.

That racist turkey should be cooked because of its ancestors’ participation in the original subjugation of Native Americans in this country by racist Europeans.

The guilt is patent, and there is but one outcome amenable to the aggrieved parties.

They’ve enjoyed turkey privilege for far too long.

I didn’t realize the radio station I listen to on occasion was an international affair. Apparently Jack FM is all over the U.S. administered by CBS radio while in the U.K. by the BBC. Wondering if Jack FM is anywhere else on this shrinking Earth.

Their format is simple enough. Wisecracking, no request, play what they want so they don’t have to pay an expensive BIG NAME Disc Jockey, cram the commercials in between sets, and run interesting side shows to pique the interest of entertainment seekers. Seems to work.

Considering something to be just plain poor taste in humor has now been escalated to high political theater.

If anything goes hand-in-hand with the current world-wide grievance culture, it is a total lack of humor. What a humorless time.

:’) Those guitarist rankings are not quite, but nearly, ridiculous.

“Fat Bottomed Girls” is the one I still enjoy. They were glam-pop and had their big hit (which makes me puke at this point) “Bohemian Rhapsody” when I was, hmm, in high school?

My favorite cover is still the dog on the platter with the apple in its mouth, followed by the deranged Santa taking a dump down the chimney, with the caption, “you’re lucky, he CAME down ours!”

I’ve developed a near-total lack of humor toward so-called animal rights activists. I could pretty much kick them all into a live wood chipper, then eat a steak. I mean that in the nicest possible way, though.
