There are widespread reports today of JCPenney stores to be closing. There has been no announcement of the exact list. There is one report of 40 stores closing soon after 30 some closed in 2014.
Oddly, the company just reported sales growth in the holiday period vs. the previous year, generating a number of positive news stories.
Whitney, Penny...at this point, what difference does it make?
Still, I hate going to any retail establishment. It's not the stores or merchandise. It's the people. I'd just rather not be around some of these jerks.
Rather than groceries, which we buy at a Warehouse, I really try to avoid brick and mortar. The REAL reason we warehouse shop for groceries is that people actually have to pay to get in, and it keeps out at least some of the riff-raff.
Soon, Sears, Kmart, and Big Lots will be closing stores frantically. I heard today that an upscale young women’s chain is closing many stores as well.
When 50% of the cash economy revolves around EBT cards then it is a race to the bottom for the lower 80 percenters.

Tires? Can't help you with that one. We buy ours from a local tire store, run by good people. I guess I didn't include that in brick and mortar places I go to, maybe because I've never run into a-holes there.
The last time I went in I had my purchase ready, the girl at the counter insisted on using a handheld device to scan my card and when it wouldn’t work I told her to use the register please, but someone else had taken it. I told her to enjoy restocking my items and to enjoy the fact that I would never buy from Penney’s again.

It’s a big plus for the retailer as well. Shrinkage is minimal, and what there is, is generally by employees and not patrons, is my understanding.
But you are absolutely right. WM is the poster child for stores with obnoxious customers. My last visit there was the impetus to slam the door when I got home and holler at the wife to get the warehouse membership Right Damn Now.
Sounds familiar. If I really told you what the problem was there, I would no longer be allowed to post. Too many “Low Information” checkout people to put it in the vernacular. ‘Nuff said.
Sears, JC Penny, and Radio Shack are all past their prime.

In the 60s Penneys had an auto service center, much like Wards and Sears at the time. They sold Bridgestone motorcyles, classmate of mine got a Bridgestone 50 there, rode it to junior high every day. At that time in Florida a 14 yo could drive a bike of 5 bhp, usually 60cc or less.
But since most of their actual retail merchandise was generic, overpriced department store, mid-quality women and children's clothing and typical home accessory sundries...that marketing strategy was an epic failure!

Making a concerted politically motivated public outreach that mocks/derides over 90% of your entire former customer base, was not a particularly sound marketing strategy.

Amazingly, it looks as though J.C. Whitney will outlive JCPenney. And the former is best known for stuff like illuminated naked lady hood ornaments.
I'm sure that must contribute to their ability to provide discounted prices. Well... really it's not that it's so much cheaper for a jar of mayonnaise, it's that the jar you get for the same money is so much bigger.
I still don't like to go on the weekend because it is so crowded, but the people in the store behave decently.
There floor staff have always been very polite and helpful if I've asked them for assistance.
They also have a very nice store brand. I've ventured into trying them for socks, tshirts, and a sport shirt. The quality of those items, especially the tshirts, has been outstanding.
LOL. I’m going to find me one of those hood ornaments!
