Many JCPenney stores closing
1/7/2015

Posted on 01/07/2015 7:19:32 PM PST by iowamark

There are widespread reports today of JCPenney stores to be closing. There has been no announcement of the exact list. There is one report of 40 stores closing soon after 30 some closed in 2014.

Oddly, the company just reported sales growth in the holiday period vs. the previous year, generating a number of positive news stories.

I’m not much of a Target shopper. Mainly because ours at one end of the local mall and the parking is ridiculous.

Have a friend with a dollar store. He’s in a cheaper building.

Small retailers have no chance if they target lower-end consumers. They have to go after higher-end shoppers by offering better quality products and service - that's the only possible way to carve out a profitable niche. The low end is completely over-saturated with giant corporate players - who can make money with tiny margins that would bankrupt independent competitors.

I'll bet J.C. Whitney still has some of that stuff in their catalog. After all, they still have a fair amount of parts for air-cooled VWs listed.

They had lots of tacky hood ornaments that appeared to be aimed straight at the "pimp mobile" market. IIRC, the one I mentioned was sort of a "winged goddess" design, with a chromed body and lighted plastic wings. I've thought of buying one, too. But then I'd have to find an appropriate car to go with it.

Not too long ago I was in a Wal-Mart and some fat f*** in an electric cart was yelling at a Wal-Mart employee helping a woman who must have been in her eighties, in front of him, apparently not moving fast enough for him.
A very long time ago I would joke that a new garment was from my designer, “Jacque Penet”. But haven’t been there for many years after they hassled me over returning some catalog shoes, tried on once at home on the carpet.
Today they are all just different degrees of the Dollar Store.
I won’t miss JC Fags R Us, and neither will most of the country. They are going the way of Life and Look, Time and Newsweek magazines, and the daily newspaper. Phooie on ‘em!

No, J.C.Penney and F.F.Woolworth were always separate companies. Penney’s department stores date back to 1902. Woolworth was the original ‘five and dime’ store and began in 1879. Woolworth still exists in a fashion, as Foot Locker.

$99 right now, used to be $75 IIRC. I definitely get my money’s worth out of it on shipping alone.

When my husband needed new long johns this weekend, I took him directly to our local J>C> Penney. The woman at the register even said, “In and out, just like you wanted.”

Our store is jammed. I hope they can hang in there. I bought cute sweaters with animals wearing glasses (as I do) last winter, that I think are adorable.

“Too many “Low Information” checkout people”

I’m shocked that companies are willing to tolerate this (though they benefit in the short run - these people must earn very little). I’ve been to a nearby Dollar General where a semi-intelligent cashier could turn a five-minute trip into half an hour, working slow as molasses and constantly encountering problems ringing people up.

I was ashamed a few weeks ago when I had two or three things in a basket and after ten minutes simply laid it on the floor where I stood on line and walked right out the door; one of my children was with me, and I just wanted to explode...so I walked out. These places operate on shoestring budgets, seeming to only open a second register when ten people are lined up at the one open one.

In the 50s my dad bought a 1903A1 Springfield rifle from Pennys. Cost him 20 bucks, still have the weapon and the sales receipt.

Yes. $99 per year. For that we get Free 2-day shipping on most items, a Netflix-type movie channel, a free book a month to borrow on Kindle, an I-tunes store with great classic rock and country music for free.

For us, it has been well worth it, but understand also that we live 40 miles from a mall, about 70 or so from a nice one.

The last time I went to our closest mall, it seemed that nearly every store was geared toward young people. Lots of surfer attire, Japanese anime tshirts, and urban hip-hop clothes.

Good for them if they're making money, but those are not my people.

When we explored Prime, I was a bit surprised. You can get so much more than books and digital music. I've bought light bulbs and boxer shorts, for example.
