Many JCPenney stores closing
1/7/2015

Posted on 01/07/2015 7:19:32 PM PST by iowamark

There are widespread reports today of JCPenney stores to be closing. There has been no announcement of the exact list. There is one report of 40 stores closing soon after 30 some closed in 2014.

Oddly, the company just reported sales growth in the holiday period vs. the previous year, generating a number of positive news stories.

Yeah DG operates with a really low headcount.
Their business model is mini WalMart with even lower costs.
I think they succeed where their location is favorable.
They already have about 11,500 stores (ref: 14,500 McDonalds, 12,000 Starbux)

Totally agree on Prime. My kids gave me a membership 5 yrs ago as a birthday gift. I’ve switched most of my auto parts buys from Rockauto to Amazon with the shipping.

I don’t even have any “guilt” about the UPS delivery because they come to our neighbor’s house 5 days a week no matter what because they run a home biz.

Realize Amazon is on the FR sh!tlist but so are every other retail store and most internet ones.

I don’t find their prices very competitive (in the same manner as Wal-Mart, where you can find a great price on the same brand/size of products). Many of Dollar General’s items seem to be a smaller size, and their store brand isn’t very good (bread, for example).

The low headcount makes buying the smallest thing there a pain in the rear; in my area they are convenient only by being a few blocks closer than Foodtown (which costs more money but much less time).

The J.C. Penney I knew and loved - grew up with - is no more, anyway. This demise is just the impostor going down.

You know, sometimes I just want to buy a product, or watch a movie, or read a book... and not have to worry about the political ramifications stemming from who I might or might not be supporting through my patronage.

Like you, I find Prime to be useful, convenient, and worth the cost. Maybe Amazonians are raging liberals. I don't know. But they at least have enough of the capitalist spirit to find my market segment.

Justice Scalia could run a store like Walmert, but if I have to tolerate a bunch of BS every time I walk in and I always leave in a bad mood, I'm not shopping there.

"Doesn’t Amazon Prime cost like $100 per year?"

yes but it gives you prime instant video (like netflix), prime music (sorta like spotify but no commercials and you choose all the music you want to listen to) Kindle lending library you can borrow kindle books for no charge. plus once each month you get to choose a free kindle book to add to your library. And of course free two day shipping from prime eligible Amazon sellers (and there are thousands of them)

I'm not sure on the borrowing of the book. I haven't explored that much, to be honest.

I've got a ton of "normal paper" books lined up, and I'm going through them.

"Any Kindle book of your choice?"

No usually it is a choice of four or so books but I've always found something good in the offerings.

I've noticed though sine I got Prime and have several Kindle devices (We all have Fire Tablets and two of us have Fire phones.) we frequently get offers for free kindle books in our email besides the once a month offer for Prime. Not sure if that is because of prime or because we have FirePhones/Kindles
