That I one of the funniest things Dave Barry has ever written! I’m still laughing! I haven’t read the book and have no plans to do so, but I saw the trailer for the movie when I was at the theatre last week, so I had some idea of what he was talking about.

As a young engineer, I worked with an older, senior engineering type who had a bad habit, one that today would get him sent off to the HR Reeducation Camp. Again.
He told dirty jokes. All the time.
Which, in those days, wasn't really a problem and I wouldn't have minded too much ...
Except that THEY WEREN'T FUNNY. At All. They were stupid and boring.
Nothing worse than a perverted joke that doesn't even have the dubious redeeming factor of being funny ...
Women like us who believe women are equal to men, and are not intimidated are real feminists-women who allow a man to treat them like an object, and are emotionally-and/or financially dependent on a man as a keeper or daddy substitute are not feminists-when I was a case manager, we called that a co-dependent and unhealthy relationship-for both people.
The broad in the book is right out of a textbook-gets involved with a much older, wealthy man who treats her as an object/possession and she enjoys the humiliation and degradation-bad message for young women who want to really be themselves, but that is just my opinion.
I still do not do people telling me what I can or can not watch, or even what I should or should not watch. I am a free person with all of my rights. I give none of them up for someone else's religious or political beliefs.
And yes I'm oldenough to make my own damn decisions.

Take out the sex and there is no plot. Actually, even with the sex the plot is lame.
If it describes sex graphically, in an alluring way it’s porn. Even with a third grade vocabulary. Were you to take out the sex then there isn’t even a shred of plot left here.

If you are talking about Waldenbooks, no. he books that got them in trouble were not best sellers.
The books they refused to take off of the shelves were “Photography Books” focusing on preteens in erotica poses.
People didn’t buy the notion that that was art, and not pedophelia.
Why are you defending Waldenbooks? You like that crap?
Fortunately enough people were disgusted by it that Waldenbooks trundle off of the Comercial stage even before big box book stores rendered their business model obsolete.
Bad message for all women in my opinion. I always considered myself an equity feminists. That is the kind of guy I ran away from.
So now you are going to redefine censorship to mean that if I choose to not see a movie, I am censoring it?
Or if I choose to exercise my freedom of speech and tell someone I think they should not see this movie, that is censorship?
Or if I sign a petition saying I am not going to see the movie, that is censorship?
So it pretty much sounds like you are saying that if I choose not to watch something, or I choose to exercise my freedom of speech in vocal or written form that you will accuse me of censoring others.
This is what years of leftist thinking has done to us. The will of the individual no longer matters. Any individual thought expressed is censoring someone else.
Please take note that the petition does not ask anyone to stop showing the movie, nor does it prevent anyone from seeing the movie. - it merely states that the signee will not be seeing the movie and will encourage others not to as well.

Which is a joke within itself, since it is about a woman being conned into sexual slavery. I read the first book, could barely get through it, not because it was morally bankrupt but because it was poorly written and boring. In describing the thoughts of the female sex slave, the author used the line “inner goddess” no less than fifty times and it truly became laughable. It was so bad, I honestly can’t remember if I finished the book. The only redeeming value is that I think it probably revved up the sex life of a lot of older women, (if what my friends say is true LOL)
In general, men are so pussified nowadays that women mistake the male character in these books as someone ‘manly’ and it excites them. I think that’s why the 50 shades book did so well.
Well, I suppose as someone who has been married a couple of times for a total of 41 years of my adult life, I may be a bit jaded, having seen just about all there is-and if you think describing graphic sex in an alluring way is porn, that is your opinion as well, and you are entitled to it. And I agree that sex has never helped a bad plot-not even the most smokin’ hot encounter ever is worth reading about or seeing if the rest of the story sucks...
I don’t think many women could be enthused about sex if it was not presented in an alluring way-what is she going to do-close her eyes and think of England, like Victorian women told their daughters to do? We’d all be single women...
And for a lot of adult women who are experienced, graphic can be okay-it can be done without being tasteless or crude...
When I went to see “Gone Girl” in a movie theatre, the “Fifty Shades” trailer came on. The theatre was full and I was sitting toward the back so I could see everyone as they watched. It was hilarious! Everyone was perfectly still while the trailer was on and then there was TOTAL SILENCE when it ended. TOTAL SILENCE!!! Nobody moved until the next trailer came on and everyone relaxed. It will be interesting to see if people actually show up to the theatre or if they’ll wait until it comes out on DVD.

But descriptions of sex almost always represent the nadir of any author's output. The Brits have a gag literary award given to the worst sex scene in anything published the previous year. There are never any shortages of entrants and the winners are usually notable authors who can usually create engaging characters, worthwhile plots, and turn a good phrase, but somehow come to pieces when writing what used to be called "the naughty bits".
I was at the library a year ago or so, and the librarian was explaining to me their system of reserving audio books, especially ones that were popular, have like a year wait time, and kept on using Fifty Shades of Grey as an example. I finally had to correct her and say, One Second After, has nothing to do with Fifty Shades of Grey. I gave up.
No, it didn’t help at all, but I wouldn’t say it was b/c of the homo advertising.
Bernard Cornwell-—didn’t he write the Saxon series? If Empty Throne is one of those, did you like it?
