American Sniper: FR Review, Thoughts, etc. (SPOILERS INCL.)
Rabidralph and FR | Jan. 31, 2015 | Rabidralph

When American Sniper went into wide release, I promised to get a thread going, after a few weeks, so that FReepers could have a discussion about the movie, Hollywood, the effect of the story on us as veterans and civilians and whatever else.

I hope that most of FR has had a chance to see it. There will probably be spoilers in this discussion.

Feel free to ping any military lists or fine arts lists concerning arts and culture.

There are tons of articles now about the movie including this latest from Variety. The movie continues to do extremely well. It's a movie that everyone should see to gain a better understanding of what those in combat sometimes go through. I hope that those who need help will get in touch with the VA and find healing.

This is a partial ping list for some people who liked the movie and maybe have more insight about the film. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s comments as they have discussed the film on other threads.

I am leery about seeing the film, because it is directed by Clint Eastwood, who also directed The Gauntlet and A Perfect world, two of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Clint Eastwood is a true genius. He took a lot of his Western photography to the movie and made a masterpiece. He is known for not pulling punches and he tells the whole story in this one.

The story tells what we were fighting and how amazing our troops are. Best war movie I ever watched.

Pray America is waking

It’s an excellent movie. I don’t cry easily, but it was hard to hold back tears at the end.

The political objections of leftists are ridiculous. I could not discern any political point of view in the film. It was about bravery, sacrifice and patriotism.

Every director has layed a few eggs here and there. This movie sucks you in from the start. Lots of great lessons and truths throughout. I highly recommend you see it. And the two movies you mention are 20 and 30 years old.

I really liked the movie as I have someone like Chris Kyle in my immediate family. Luckily, he has never had any PTSD issues and is now also helping others that do. My only criticism of the movie is regarding the father explaining the “sheep, wolves and sheepdogs” at the supper table. It didn't include how the sheep don't like the sheepdogs because they have the same appearance and ability for violence and aggression as a wolf, but the sheep cannot tell they are good, not evil. That describes most libs today.

I do hope America is waking up. The truth is, is that war does exact a heavy toll on those who fight it, but sometimes it must be fought. It’s the price we pay to live in this fallen world.

Yes, I cried leaving the theater and driving to go to dinner. The lessons found in the movie, the men who fight our wars...Chris’ father should be very proud of how he raised his sons.

Well, no need to get sidetracked by that discussion in the movie. But the story succinctly explained everything. I think anyone who dwells on the analogy will come to the same conclusion you did about what's wrong with the world today.

Thank your family member for his service.

I cried leaving the theater and driving to go to dinner.

I was still crying when I got to the car. I knew it was a movie, but at the end there was this sense of profound loss. One of the greatest among us, just gone. And way too soon.

Yes, it does. Here's a listing of the Best Picture nominees, as well as a poll to FReep.

I'm surprised at the number of nominees from pictures that haven't done well at the box office or they seem to not be in wide release. I guess the world isn't like it was 30 years ago when all we had for entertainment were movies at the theater and sports.

The movie will be punished for its success in Hollywierd. It will not get one of their little trophies for hating America through media.
