His best golf is behind him, but there’s still a lot of talent left in there if he can overcome his tendency to try too much, too quickly.

I don’t know about sympathy. There is a certain sadness watching the end of an athlete’s career when they slip from greatness. But by and large Tiger has always been a bit of a jerk even before we found out he had a fondness for Denny’s waitresses, so it’s hard to sympathize with him. But it is still rough to know the great days are behind him, no more will he be crushing courses, now he’s just another tour player.

He is listed at 50-to-1, which prompted a question that was even more shocking than the odds.

Was that to win? Or to make the cut?

...

I have to laugh.

True, he was player of the year in 2013 I believe.

However, the yips in his chipping have been creeping into his game for a long time and it’s getting worse, not better. Combine that with the pull hooks he’s hitting, which are deadly for a pro, and it’s not looking good.

He had by far and away the best decade of golf between 1998 and 2008. It’s not even close. And he single-handedly increased the tournament purses by magnitudes. Look at the TV ratings when he is vs. isn’t in the hunt on Sunday. Nobody watches if he isn’t. It sucks to see what has happened to him, but I’m glad I got to see him in his prime. Quite a ride.

“He pissed it all away.”

I think it was another bodily fluid that was his undoing

Sympathy? Because he now sucks? Couldn’t happen to a nicer Obama supporter.

I guess banging those ugly waffle house waitresses, porn actresses and other random skanks was his secret weapon. Mike Tyson/Buster Douglas syndrome. No one’s scared anymore. The bully has been exposed.

I'm not a golfer. Never had the time or money to play. Never played. But the Bobby Jones story always pulls me to the game.

Few people have the opportunity to be considered to be "The Greatest Ever"

Tiger blew it.

Not from me and never was or will be. Many professional athletes are not very nice people. Woods is one of the many.

We can just guess on all this stuff to death I guess - though i would say that first :)

Pull hooks - yes, deadly because of the lack of predictability. Locking the left knee prevented this in the past. Now after surgeries this is no longer an option. So a fundamental change in the swing mechanics is required. He never had a Julius Boros swing so this is a huge re-engineering.

Additionally, the shape of the grooves no longer favors his style of play. Driving accuracy is at a greater premium.

As for the yips, I am guessing it is related to pain medication or the results of coming off it. Opiates change your neuro chemistry and leave their imprint for many months.

He might benefit from a simply sitting down with Johnny Miller and having a discussion about “longevity”.

Had Tiger not made a birdie on the last hole on Saturday of last year’s US Open, he would be 11 months without playing 72 holes.

That’s really bad playing.
