Scientists say 'Enigma machine' has unlocked clues to the way the virus of the common cold assembles - making it possible to stop disease in its tracks
A scientific breakthrough could herald an end to the common cold, after researchers found a way to “jam” the genetic code and stop the virus replicating.
Experts said the discovery could allow scientists to design molecules which could “stop the virus in its tracks” - fending off colds and winter vomiting disease.
Scientists from the Universities of Leeds and York used a computer-based model to identify a code in the viral genome, which causes rhinoviruses, the most common group of viruses, and the cause of most colds.
They said the breakthrough means that in future, it could be possible to find a way to jam the messages conveyed by the molecules, stopping the virus functioning before disease even starts.
The breakthrough could save future generations from the misery of colds, and protect them from more serious illnesses.
However, that day could be some time off, with trials on animal viruses required before scientists are able to develop a drug which acts on the signals in the genetic code.
Experts said the findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition, could help to protect people from a large group of infectious viruses.

I never minded getting a cold before flu season sets in. Fighting it boosts ones immune system.
Without strong immune systems, how can people fight diseases?

Uh huh...whatever you say. So when dothe government sponsored vaccinations begin and will the signup form it have a barcode assigned to each patient and also require a DNA swab?
Sounds like an antiviral drug is being envisioned, not a vaccine.

Vaccines for illnesses like this are nonsensical to me. I would rather get a cold, which I haven’t had for several years, than have to get vaccinated for it.
What was science fiction ten years ago, now begins to verge on researchable.
It would probably be an antiviral medicine taken like today’s Tamiflu, but would work differently.
I discovered a cure and haven’t had a cold last more than half a day in the past 8 years. Sometimes home remedies really work and they are a fraction of the cost of drugs that have years of research into them.
How about we start with safe food? Ya know something the rest of the world hasn’t already made illegal because it’s poison!
Winter vomiting disease? I have never heard of this.
I’ve had some kind of respiratory illness ever since I got back from a Florida vacation almost 3 weeks ago. I think my only remedy would be to go back to Florida and plunk my fat rear on the beach. Think my insurance would cover it? :)
Yeah but then you will get a SuperCold that will overwhelm it.
Yeah I never get a flu shot and getting the flu bad is something that happens to me about once every 7 to 10 years.
This last one knocked me on my butt but the rest of the time my flus consist of mild fevers and slight achyness without really slowing me down. I attribute it to a strong immune system.
